DSHS BHA Institutional Counselor 3

The Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) is seeking multiple Institutional Counselor 3’s assigned to the Behavioral Health and Treatment Center - Oak Unit, a Residential Treatment Facility located in Grand Mound, WA .

IC3s are members of a multi-disciplinary team and is responsible for implementing a therapeutic environment/milieu, as directed, through effective management of treatment strategies, proactive interventions, and monitoring of residents' behavior. Each team member contributes to rehabilitating individuals who are committed to DSHS by the courts to 90- to 180-day civil commitment. Residents at BHTC-OAK are individuals who have been diagnosed with mental illness conditions.

As an IC3 you may be required to work with disorderly residents who may require intensive involvement by staff, may pose an imminent threat to self and others, may be an imminent risk for harm from others, may present risk for attempted elopement, and/or may seek opportunities to sabotage and damage property. This position works with residents who may challenge staff direction, policies, unit rules and the State's authority for detainment.

Some Of What You'll Do

  • Instructs and encourages residents regarding policies, procedures, protocols, and facility rules
  • Encourages residents to participate in treatment and recreation activities
  • Interacts with residents daily
  • Assists residents with problem solving and counsels the residents informally, individually and small groups with the direction of direct supervisor or clinical staff
  • Facilitates or assists with small group sessions with residents
  • Participates in meetings regarding the treatment progress of individual residents
  • Responds to resident emergencies that could be psychiatric, behavioral and/or medical
  • Uses de-escalation skills and techniques
  • Attends treatment team meetings whenever possible and daily team meetings
  • Provides shift updates
  • Provides direct day-to-day monitoring of the CRTF residential population
  • Completes accurate, detailed, and timely required documentation
  • Maintains a safe, secure living environment
  • Monitors resident interactions
  • Performs continual observations of unit activities
  • Assists in ordering, receiving, gathering and distributing supplies for groups, incentive store, clothing hygiene items
  • Conducts proper security procedures

Knowledge Of

We are looking for professionals who have:

  • Principles and practices of good communication, evaluating and monitoring persons or situations, and deciding on the proper course of action
  • Knowledge and recognition of psychiatric symptoms are preferred
  • Laws and rules related to competency evaluation and restoration treatment are preferred
  • Ability to create positive rapport with their team and the residents
  • Must be able to respond appropriately to crises and/or be willing to learn how to do so

Ability To

  • Safely physically intervene with patients exhibiting high-risk behaviors using approved techniques, maintaining optimal mental and physical health and dignity
  • Compile and prepare reports on the client's progress, reactions, and overall adjustment
  • Effectively and efficiently communicate verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrate a capacity for compassion and curiosity towards residents

Required License Or Certifications

  • Current CPR card
  • Current Food Handler's permit within 14 days of employment. More information can be found here

Who should apply?

Professionals with a bachelor’s degree preferably involving a major study in psychology, sociology, or other social science;

AND

Two years of professional counseling or casework experience or working closely with a psychiatric population in a therapeutic capacity
