Position Summary: The Division of Family and Community Engagement and External Affairs includes a diverse portfolio of offices, including Family and Community Empowerment, Intergovernmental Affairs, Office of Language Access and Communications, Marketing, Press and Knowledge Management teams. These teams work together to assist the Chancellor in serving the largest school system in the country, composed of approximately 1 million students and to ensure that parents, students and all New York City communities have the information they need to be informed advocates for their children, neighborhoods and schools.

The New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) is dedicated to creating and supporting partnerships among schools, families and the community. As a part of the Marketing and Branding office, the Creative Designer will serve as a lead creative designer responsible for creating innovative digital assets for the web, social and other digital platforms for NYCPS while maintaining the highest levels of quality, efficiency, consistency and innovation. In collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Branding, the Creative Designer will gather project requirements, explore and create strategic designs and follow through with implementation. In addition under the guidance of the Director of Marketing and Branding, the Creative Designer will perform creative design tasks under the responsibilities listed below. Performs related work.

Key Relationships: Serve as a design and marketing resource for the Director of Marketing and Branding and other divisions and offices throughout the NYCPS.

Responsibilities

  • Creates infographics and presentation materials to simplify communication of complex concepts and data.
  • Supports the Marketing Department through various tasks, with a focus on developing motion graphics, illustrations and other creative materials for the web, social and other digital platforms.
  • Plans the production and implementation of creative designs for multiple deadline-driven projects simultaneously, including collateral, out-of-home (OOH) advertising and digital advertising.
  • Coordinates with other marketing vendors for production of collateral, OOH and digital projects; serves in an advisory capacity to NYCPS colleagues, designers and agency vendors who work on paid social media posts, video, the development of marketing materials and related creative projects to ensure that they conform to NYCPS technical and visual standards.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Marketing and Branding, unites the NYCPS under a cohesive visual identity and contributes to the development of brand/visual identity style guidelines.
  • Writes and edits documentation as needed for style guides and other communications.
  • Upholds brand standards while creating engaging designs to support marketing strategies, managing the process of creative concept, design, implementation and placement in all channels.
  • Engages NYCPS stakeholders through marketing design communications.
  • Works in partnership with the creative team to develop campaigns that meet objectives for public-­facing multichannel marketing efforts, including TV, online advertising, Digital Out-of-home (DOOH) and video assets in all 10 NYCPS supported languages.
  • Gathers project specifications and requirements through external and inter-agency interfacing.
  • Maintains a high level of proficiency in all design software.
  • Assists with multimedia content production as it relates to design.
  • Ensures marketing projects are completed on schedule and on/under budget.
  • Manages special projects and initiatives to support the Marketing team as needed.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum

  • High school graduation or equivalent and two years of training in an approved technical school in oils, watercolors, painting, design, black and white, layout and other art media and seven years full-time paid experience as a commercial artist, four years of which must have been in supervision and planning of artwork done by a staff; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1". However, all candidates must have four years of supervisory experience as described above.

Plus

  • Strong understanding of the NYCPS’s business model and how creative solutions contribute to the NYCPS’s success over time.
  • Experience with vendor selection and budgets.
  • Experience with rebranding.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with Adobe Creative Suite, including After Effect.
  • Expertise with layout, composition, typography, color, filters and imagery.

Preferred

  • Strong visual communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex concepts and data through images.
  • Experience developing strategic visual content for social media.
  • Experience with developing graphics, illustrations, videos, gifs and other creative materials for web, social and other digital platforms.
  • Understanding of complex brand systems, including sub-brands and co-brands.
  • Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Flexibility, creativity and ability to work well under pressure.
  • Familiarity with the NYCPS system.
  • Knowledge and work experience with education policy.

Salary: $92,881 - $120,000

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
