Description

Reporting to the Head Coach, The Assistant Head Coach provides assistance to the Head Coach in order to run

a successful athletics program. The Assistant Coach mentors student athletes to help them reach their full

potential on and off the field; helps build a program that the University, students, alumni, and community can be

proud of. This position will assist in the recruiting of potential student athletes and provide complementary

management of the program including practice, competitions, travel, purchasing and other duties as assigned.

The Assistant Coach will adhere to institutional, conference, and all other required regulations and policies. The

Assistant Coach assists all aspects of recruiting potential student athletes in order to maintain a team that will

compete. The Assistant Coach maintains knowledge of all institutional and Conference rules and regulations for

recruiting. The Assistant Coach assists in the overall management of the programs as directed by the head

coach (travel, practice, competition, etc.) but will have specific responsibilities in athletics also as directed by the

Head Coach.

Essential Job Functions

  • Working under the supervision of the head coach, responsible for designing instructions for individual student-athletes, through a great deal of independent discretion and judgment as to the manner and method of teaching student athletes in the fundamentals of the sport (55%).
  • Travels to meet and observe potential student athletes, evaluates potential student athletes, communicates with potential student athletes, coaches, parents, and guardians to promote Shaw University and the athletics program; writes letters, makes phone calls, and maintains general correspondence with potential student athletes to build rapport and promote general interest in the program (20%).
  • Maintains current sport-specific technical and coaching knowledge, develops existing members of the program, assists in the organization of practice plans and competition, communicates and demonstrates specific required skills (5%)
  • Adheres to all institutional, Conference and all other rules, regulations and policies (as required).
  • Assists in the oversight of volunteer coaches and student workers to ensure that all team-oriented duties are completed in a timely manner.
  • Acts as a liaison to help coordinate community service involvement .
  • Assumes all head coaching duties in the absence of the Head Coach (as needed).
  • Assists Head coach in all academic matters pertaining to the team, including instructing/teaching student athletes in the fundamentals of the sport.

Minimum Job Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning with prior participation experience in collegiate athletics; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 2-5 years coaching experience at the college level is preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, teach and mentor student athletes required.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, maintain a clean driving record.
  • Must be responsive, quick-thinking, and possess an innate ability to anticipate and respond to issues.
  • Establish priorities, and work in an organized manner with emphasis on detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments and meet competing deadlines.

Physical Demands

The work environment is an athletic and office setting which requires the ability to travel much of the time, work long hours including evenings and weekends, be physically active, able to lift up to 50 pounds, and have the ability to demonstrate specific skills.
