General Function

The Assistant Professor is a member of the ranked faculty with an intermediate academic rank who has demonstrated achievement in the areas of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate to the discipline. The Assistant Professor’s teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor. The Assistant Professor engages in scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and is expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research, based upon the availability of resources and consistent with the mission of the University.

Description Of Primary Duties

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Professor are assigned by the Department Head and may include serving as an academic advisor. The Assistant Professor will have the responsibility to teach full- time undergraduate and graduate special education courses. The faculty member will have an active research/scholarly agenda, as appropriate for tenure track faculty. The faculty member may also provide support to our Pathways for Paras program. This program supports the transition of individuals from working in K-12 settings in non-certified roles into certified teaching positions. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching, and/or service. The department is looking for someone to collaborate with colleagues on committees and projects that support the program, department, college, university, and relevant professional organizations.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Assistant Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Additional Qualifications

Doctoral degree in special education or related field. Degree should be from an accredited institution of higher learning. Ability to facilitate a learning environment that encourages the knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds is required. A willingness to serve the academic unit, college, and the University. Strong evidence of potential to develop scholarship through presentations, publications, and/or grants. Knowledge of recent trends in special education.
