Job Summary

Under supervision and guidance from PI, the Staff Research Associate 1 (SRA 1) will conduct experiments in support of ongoing research projects in the lab. S/he will also be sharing responsibilities in general laboratory upkeep and maintenance with other members of the laboratory.

Laboratory Support Duties: The SRA will contribute to various aspects of general laboratory maintenance to ensure that the lab runs in an efficient and well-organized manner. Specific duties will include maintaining an inventory of and restocking common lab supplies and reagents. The SRA will also assist in maintaining laboratory equipment in excellent condition and communicating as needed with service personnel to coordinate equipment maintenance, repair or replacement.

Technical Duties

Routine duties: Under supervision, perform mouse colony maintenance and health checks, , chemistry, record keeping and updating facility databases, organization and maintenance of the animal space, following and writing standard operating procedures, complying with safety and infection control standards, complying with institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) guidelines.

Other duties can include molecular, genetic, and phenotypic data analysis.

Department Description

THE ELI AND EDYTHE BROAD CENTER OF REGENERATION MEDICINE AND STEM CELL RESEARCH The Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research (Broad Center) at UCSF encompasses a broad range of embryonic and adult stem cell studies with the goal of translating findings in these studies to novel therapeutic strategies.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in neuroscience or a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in a basic research laboratory setting, preferably in neuroscience or developmental biology
  • Experience providing technical support and/or laboratory management in a basic neuroscience research laboratory
  • Molecular biology skill set, such as RNA/DNA extraction, molecular cloning, qRT-PCR
  • Proficiency with general computer skills, including email, word processing (Word, Pages, LaTeX, or equivalent), preparing presentations (Powerpoint, Keynote, or equivalent), spreadsheet management (Excel,R,Numbers, or equivalent), literature searches and online queries, and ability to quickly learn and master various computer programs
  • Excellent communication skills, encompassing both oral and written, with the ability to work effectively independently and as a member of a diverse group of researchers, faculty, students and support staff
  • Must be self-motivated, a quick learner, technically adept, reliable, accurate, flexible, efficient, organized and must keep detailed records
  • Ability to work under deadlines
  • Ability to perform technical procedures, interpret results, recognize irregularities and suggest recommendations for modifications of techniques and approaches
  • Demonstrated record of excellent attendance and reliability

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of professional experience working with animal colony, e.g. mouse husbandry.
  • Experience analyzing behavioral data
  • Experience using R and Python codling languages
  • Dependable, detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
