Character Biosciences is a drug discovery and development company building world-class, deeply-phenotyped databases that integrate genomics with longitudinal clinical and imaging data. Powered by our data platform, Character Bio is currently advancing two programs in Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration with additional programs in earlier stages of discovery research.

We are seeking a talented Research Associate or Senior Research Associate to join our stem cell platform. This role will support experimental validation of drug targets and the discovery and optimization of drug candidates for ophthalmology indications. As part of a broader pre-clinical team, this role will also support advancement of lead candidates to IND. This position offers an opportunity to join a growing, dynamic team and directly contribute to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics. Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a team to develop and perform in vitro assays, including but not limited to: modulation of gene expression, cell-based functional assays, flow cytometry, ELISA, qPCR, and high-content cell imaging
  • Maintain cultures of various mammalian cell lines and/or iPSC-derived cells
  • Develop iPSC based models of disease
  • Independently plan and execute experiments, performing data analysis and interpretation of results
  • Collaborate across preclinical research groups, coordinating tasks among multiple projects
  • Innovatively troubleshoot, effectively resolving challenges as they arise
  • Regularly present at internal meetings, effectively communicating scientific ideas and experimental results

Key qualifications:

  • BS with 2+ years (or MS with 1+ years) research experience related to mechanisms of human disease and/or drug discovery research
  • Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively, and comfortably in a fast-paced environment
  • Must have excellent troubleshooting and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal scientific communication skills are essential
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture necessary, experience with iPSC/hESC a plus
  • Experience working at medium/high throughput a plus
