Job Summary

The Dockhand is responsible for the safe mooring of vessels and general operation of the docks, by facilitating and assisting with the arrival and departure of boats, maintaining a safe and clean environment throughout the harbor and marina facilities, and acting as the initial liaison between customers and the marina management team.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Perform morning and afternoon dock checks, as well as periodic walks through docks, common areas, tenant and boaters lounge perimeters, monitoring parking lots and street side curbs for debris or safety issues.
  • Safely secure boats to dock using proper dock lines and fenders.
  • Assist with refueling vessels.
  • Assist with securing company property.
  • Operates VHF radio as necessary to contact boats and coordinate dockage, with dock staff.
  • Assist customers with general boating needs, including safely docking and getting in and out of their boat, and helping with carts, coolers, fishing equipment, or other items as needed.
  • Provide routine maintenance such as basic cleaning of all restrooms, showers, and lounges throughout the day, maintaining clean docks, walkways, ramp ways, grounds, equipment, and other designated areas, weeding, performing morning and evening daily trash removal and disposal, and organizing between assisting customers.
  • Perform marina safety inspections and immediately reporting any issues to management, including but not limited to, looking for sheens or objects that contribute to tripping hazards within the marina, inspecting the contents or surrounding base of dock boxes for contaminants that may reach our harbor waters, inspecting docked vessels such as dock lines, electrical cords, cable connections, and fenders, and notifying appropriate parties if fuel is smelled or observed.
  • Review the daily and weekly dock work lists and ensure all duties are completed accordingly.
  • Ensure proper cash handling procedures at all times.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to members and guests and welcome new slip holders and transients in a kind, courteous and professional manner.
  • Assist and support with special events or activities held at the marina.

Knowledge, Skills, And Requirements

  • Must be able to swim and work safely around the water.
  • Ability to stand for most of the workday and work comfortably outdoors.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to board vessels from the dock or ground ladders and climb dock ramps.
  • Unlimited or unimpaired ability to walk, bend, stoop, climb, work safely on a ladder or in confined spaces, lift, carry, reach/extend arms, and hands above shoulder height, or otherwise move in a constantly changing environment.
  • Previous marina operations preferred, including boat lifting, handling, and towing, knowledge of nautical terminology, and plant and equipment maintenance including lawn mower operation and hand and power tools.
  • Ability to exhibit proper etiquette on telephones and VHF Radio.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment to achieve goals and targets.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with coworkers and customers.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Adaptable to a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have a flexible schedule to include working weekends and holidays.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be at least age 16 years old.
  • Eligible candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test as part of our Drug Free Workplace Program (DFWP) and background check screening.
