Job Description

The Syracuse University Press project editor position maintains copyediting guidelines, quality assessment techniques, and feedback mechanisms for use before, during, and after copyediting phase. This position advises copyeditors in collaboration with the manager of editorial and production on quality of work. It will shepherd manuscripts through editorial and production process, ensuring quality control and on-time publication schedules; delegates duties and tasks, as necessary, to the editorial and production assistant, work study students, and interns during manuscript preparation and processing; and maintains editorial and production schedules and documentation in the Biblio database. Finally, in collaboration with the manager of editorial and production, it identifies and implements other tools for scheduling and managing editorial processes.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Three (3) plus years of relevant experience required.
  • Familiarity with scholarly publishing preferred.

Skills and Knowledge

  • High level of proficiency in the English language and grammar, scholarly apparatus, and the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Extensive writing skills and professional experience in writing and copyediting.
  • Familiarity with scheduling and project management tools.
  • Experience in working with authors to develop manuscripts.
  • Creativity, flexibility, and ability to adapt to change.

Responsibilities

  • Updates checklists for all phases of editorial process, in collaboration with the manager of editorial and production and staff to improve processes and take advantage of new technologies.
  • Maintains schedules and documentation in the Biblio database.
  • Handles the preparation of manuscripts for copyediting and design.
  • Evaluates manuscripts for problematic aspects to address with copyeditors and design staff.
  • Assesses copyeditors’ work and furnishes feedback in collaboration with the manager of editorial and production.
  • Advises the manager of copyeditors’ skill levels and interests.
  • Maintains quality control measurements and guidelines for copyeditors to improve workflow and product.
  • Works with authors and other teams at the Press to confirm schedules and finalize copyedited manuscripts and page proofs.
  • Transmits materials to senior designer.
  • Treviews proof corrections and indexes.
  • Evaluates e-book conversions and authorizes them for publication.
  • In collaboration with the senior designer and the manager of editorial and production, delegates tasks to the editorial and production assistant, work study students, and interns as necessary.
