The Clinical Student Externship is a training program offered by CHS for students to experience clinical practices and realities of the clinical settings before graduation. The student provides direct care to patients and families under the mentorship and supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Roles And Responsibilities

  • Obtaining and reporting vital signs, ambulation, and repositioning of patients as scheduled or as needed in a timely manner.
  • Reporting abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions of the patient to the appropriate RN. Examples include changes in vital signs, ADL's, patient ambulation and/or transfers, and daily weights.
  • Monitoring and recording intake and output of fluids and patient weights.
  • Participate in advanced clinical skills selected from the competency list as training is accomplished.
  • Intentionally rounding on each patient every hour to ensure the above responsibilities are complete and patient needs are met.

Required Skills And Experience

  • Education: Enrolment in a clinical program.
  • Experience: Clinical experience in applicable patient care program of study.
  • Licensure: Not required
  • Certification: Not required, a record of BLS/ACLS will be noted

Physical Requirements

  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., Use of computer keyboard).
  • May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, IV solutions
  • Stooping and kneeling (e.g., picking up items from the floor, removing and replacing items on lower shelves, and filing documents in lower file drawers).
  • Sitting, walking, or standing for long periods may be necessary.
  • Must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.

Location and Travel Requirements:

  • On-Site at Cayuga Medical Center

Pay Range Disclosure

  • Standard Rate of $19.50 per hour plus benefits

OR

  • Enhanced Rate of $21.93 per hour w/o benefits
