Pay Range

$294,780 - $380,424

Job Description
We have an opening in the Computational Engineering Division (CED) for a Deputy Division Leader to take an active role in the leadership and management of a highly skilled and dynamic division of approximately 300 engineering, scientific, mathematical, and administrative professionals dedicated to foundational contributions to the Laboratory's programs, technology innovation and development, and mission focused research. CED comprises core capabilities in computational engineering (including computational structural and fluid mechanics, materials and advanced manufacturing modeling and simulation, computational electromagnetics, and generative design optimization), data analytics (including machine learning, statistics and operations research), and signal and imaging sciences. CED is also the administrative home for most technical staff doing research in the Center for Computational Engineering (expanding our mod/sim capabilities and partnerships) as well as the Center for Design and Optimization (focused on generative design using advanced computing to accelerate manufacturing of components and systems).

This position is funded at a minimum of 50% and requires you to have a position in a related technical role for the remainder of your assignment. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), in the Engineering Directorate.

In this role you will
  • Participate as a member of CED's senior leadership team in the formulation of strategic planning activities and goal setting for the Division.
  • Provide direction in the overall conduct and coordination of personnel administration activities, including but not limited to performance review, alignment, and salary management, and activities for recruiting, hiring, transfers, training, and career development for the Division.
  • Develop organizational strategies including determining the long-term goals of the Division with the management team and provide support in the development and management of the division budget.
  • Manage and develop section leaders as their immediate line supervisor and provide additional support and mentorship to group leaders, technical, and administrative staff across the Division.
  • Provide strategic technical advice in a breadth of computational subject areas to employees, programs, and management.
  • Develop solutions to highly complex and/or sensitive issues/problems that require innovative approaches and/or technologies that may not yet exist.
  • Support management in attracting and retaining projects, programs, funding, and staff, providing strategic direction as a scientific/technical leader.
  • Serve on CED, Engineering Directorate, and Laboratory committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Expert knowledge and demonstrated intellectual leadership experience in one or more of the core capabilities that comprise the Division, which include computational engineering (including computational structural and fluid mechanics, materials modeling and simulation, computational electromagnetics, and optimization), data analytics (including machine learning and statistics), and signal and imaging sciences..
  • Significant experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of complex technical problems.
  • Significant experience contributing within a technical organization or IT management team, including knowledge of strategic planning, budgeting, and organizational dynamics.
  • Significant experience effectively mentoring, developing, leading, and managing multi-disciplinary project teams to meet deliverables.
  • Expert level communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively explain, present, and influence ideas to employees at all levels of management.


Qualifications We Desire
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Expert knowledge and extensive experience applying personnel policy and procedures in a wide array of situations dealing with hiring activities and personnel management.
  • Advanced knowledge of LLNL programs and the role of discipline support organizations. Advanced knowledge of the missions and program areas supported by CED.
  • Significant experience contributing to and being a part of the LLNL's performance and salary management process. Significant experience interpreting and implementing Laboratory policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of the missions and program areas supported by CED.
