JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Teaching and Learning Assistant provides support to the teaching laboratories within Educational Development. This position supports faculty, lab manager, and senior laboratory technologists who facilities basic science courses for UTHSC students. This position assists with preparing chemical reagents, staging/de-staging procedures, ensuring proper glassware cleaning, and providing administrative support.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assists Senior Lab Technologists/Lab Manager/Faculty with preparing chemical reagents (compound, substance or mixture) to detect the presence or absence of another substance.
  • Assists staff with preparing microbiological media and/or bacterial cultures to meet basic science learning objectives.
  • Uses laboratory standards, controls, and good record keeping for persons analyzing and interpreting results.
  • Assists Senior Lab Technologists/Lab Manager/Faculty with staging and de-staging the laboratories for procedures and demonstrations.
  • Ensures that reagents are shelf-stable and not expired.
  • Ensures that proper cleaning techniques are followed for maximum accuracy in sample and standard results.
  • Orders, receives, and maintains lab supplies and consumables in the inventory.
  • Utilizes project management software to guide and maintain lab data and associated documentation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience in educational, industrial, research, or clinical laboratory; OR Associate’s Degree in lieu of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of chemical reagent preparation.
  • Knowledge of chemical safety in terms of use, storage, and disposal.
  • Skill in handling, preparing, mixing, and producing stains, standards, samples, and unknowns.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment such as balances, centrifuges, glassware washers, spirometers, pH meters, and spectrophotometers.
  • Ability to be flexible and cooperative in a work environment.
  • Ability to manage time wisely and accomplish specified objectives and job duties.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands.
  • Ability to communicate well both orally and in written form.
