Summary Description

Under direction of the General Counsel and other legal counsel and staff in the Office of General Counsel, performs varied and responsible office and secretarial support dealing with non-routine matters requiring research, investigation or analysis of current issues of interest to the office. Employee exercises considerable initiative by anticipating requirements of legal counsel and staff for information, assembling information for reports coming due, filing, and tracking events or situations to keep legal counsel and staff informed. Coordinates work with administrative service managers of executive level offices and other staff within MCPS, as well as in the offices of other attorneys and in other organizations, requiring judgment in arranging meetings and communication matters. Employee ensures, either personally or through others, that office support is available on a timely basis to serve the Office of General Counsel, that adequate supplies are on hand, and that equipment is in good condition.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, And ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of business English, spelling, general vocabulary, arithmetic and legal secretarial procedures and practices. Considerable knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and word processing equipment to complete word processing tasks, and an understanding of the general organization and functions of the major units of MCPS. Some knowledge of, or interest in, researching and reading legal issues affecting education. Ability to keep complex records, assemble and organize data and to prepare reports from such records. Ability to compose memoranda and letters from general instructions and to take rapid and accurate notes from individuals or at group meetings are essential. Ability to carry out continuing assignments on own initiative, and handle confidential and controversial matters with judgment and tact. Good oral and written communications and human relations skills.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, And EXPERIENCE

High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree with course work specific to the legal field preferred. Two years or more experience in the legal secretarial field creating, and maintaining legal documents, such as summonses, motions, subpoenas, etc., conducting research and reading legal articles, creating client accounts, and related fiscal work preferred. Some experience in Montgomery County Public Schools preferred. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
