Position Description

Full-time. The vice president of student experience (VPSE) reports to the president, serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet, and provides leadership in modernizing the college experience for Jamestown Community College students from initial engagement to completion of their learning experience.

The VPSE is responsible for adopting, adapting, and identifying high impact practices for recruiting and retaining students from prospect to graduate; ensuring effective, streamlined intake processes for students, and a portfolio of engaging experiences throughout the student experience while attending JCC; overseeing enrollment management, campus and residence life, career counseling, academic advising, athletics, and student conduct; and ensuring college compliance with federal and state regulations regarding student experiences. All efforts will be evidence-based and grounded in CAS-Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education.

The VPSE leads a fully integrated student intake, advising, and retention plan for the college; applies an entrepreneurial approach to all endeavors; and models a collaborative and innovative spirit in pursuing college goals in collaboration with others. The VPSE is responsible for creating targeted, site-specific and market-specific enrollment plans, ensuring functional areas are accountable for, and supported in achieving goals by creating a reflective culture that is alert to data and trends. Among the key expectations for this vice president is the ability to develop and sustain working partnerships across areas within the college and with various constituent and community groups.

Additionally, the VPSE will be charged with reshaping the operations of the college division previously known as “student affairs” to reflect an intentional focus on student experiences. This will include implementing a vision of Guided Pathways and Completion by Design efforts, locally contextualized for a community college situated in a rural region of western New York State on the northern most region of Appalachia.

Finally, the vice president will seek out, pursue, and manage grants and other funding opportunities that will enhance student experience and that will help ensure financial stability for the college.

Essential Functions

Provides leadership modernizing all student experiences functions from student prospecting through completion including the following:

Admissions & Recruitment

  • Oversees implementation of processes, policies, systems, technology, and customer service models that facilitate admission and matriculation of students into the college.
  • Oversees the development of recruitment plans for the college’s target audiences.

Athletics

  • Leads the development and implementation a comprehensive, sustainable athletics plan for the college including the right mix of NJCAA teams, intramural sports, and club sports for the Olean and Jamestown campuses.
  • Integrate support for athletics across the college.

Campus & Residence Life

  • Promotes a culture of learning, development, and engagement for students outside of their academic pursuits.
  • Provide leadership for the implementation of activities that complement and enhance the academic programming of Jamestown Community College and enriches the experience and development of students, including co-curricular activity creation, student conduct adjudication, and student life programming.
  • Oversee residence life operations, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and supportive living environment that promotes student development, community engagement, and academic success.

Career Counseling & Academic Advising

  • Oversees the implementation of career, personal, and transfer counseling.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of a strategic retention plan.
  • Oversees the implementation of the college’s academic advising and career counseling model.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of a retention plan.

Judicial Affairs

  • Provide oversight and leadership for student Judicial Affairs, ensuring the fair and consistent enforcement of the student code of conduct while promoting a safe and respectful campus environment.

Marketing & Communications

  • Shapes and develops the college image through executive leadership of branding activities, public relations activities and other mechanisms which create positive top of mind awareness of the college, and which support the college’s vision to become the premier provider of education for the region.

Other

  • Serves on/leads college committees, including student governance, and other initiatives that have a focus on building enrollments.
  • Creates partnerships with internal college constituents across functional areas to develop integrated approaches to recruitment and marketing. Develops external partnerships that support recruitment efforts.
  • Provides leadership and coordination for a number of cross-functional teams, task forces, or committees, which are central to the college’s effort to continually increase quality by maintaining a state of ongoing improvement.
  • Provides leadership for an integrated approach to marketing and recruitment efforts, and for encouraging marketing linkages with and among academic affairs, workforce readiness, the JCC foundation, and other areas of the college which impact recruitment of students.
  • Serves as primary spokesperson for the college, managing all media relations.

Qualifications

Required: Master’s degree in an area relevant to the position responsibilities and five (5) years of progressively responsible leadership in higher education; demonstrated experience in developing and managing media relations, recruitment of students and leadership in administration and supervision in the areas of enrollment growth; student life; student success programming; data analysis and reporting. Excellent oral, written, interpersonal and leadership skills; analytical skills to identify needs, develop and improve services and evaluate best practices; ability to work effectively with students, parents, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, and the community; and ability to develop and interpret policy statements. Demonstrated success in teamwork and skills related to motivating and working with others at all levels of a complex organization.

Preferred: Doctorate degree in an area relevant to the position; community college experience.

Additional Information

Salary: $128,000 - $150,000/year. Excellent benefits package, including medical and dental insurance, paid vacation and sick leave, and NYS retirement.
