Job Description

SUMMARY - An employee in this position uses manual labor to perform unskilled tasks of a physically demanding nature of janitorial and building maintenance activities. Work assignments will involve the learning of new tasks and methods. Performance is evaluated based on timely completion of assignments, thoroughness of work, adherence to accepted methods and practices, and ability to successfully learn and complete new methods and operations. This work is performed under close and direct supervision of the Facility Foreman.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Maintains cleanliness of assigned area, including cleaning bathrooms and replenishing supplies, cleaning and waxing floors, vacuuming carpet, dusting/cleaning doors or windows, emptying trash cans, set-up and breakdown of table and chairs and related janitorial work.
  • Operates a vehicle such as a pick-up truck or van to transport equipment to job sites and assist with department needs.
  • Acts as a messenger when necessary, including delivering cleaning supplies, written messages, and furniture.
  • Provides security service when necessary, including checking for unlocked doors and reporting suspicious activities.
  • Schedules and prioritizes time to clean various offices and to perform set-up duties for special meetings when necessary.
  • Performs minor building and equipment maintenance including painting, patching minor wall damage, installing hardware, replacing light bulbs and fixtures, lubricating specific equipment, duties requiring the use of a ladder and keeping janitorial equipment in good repair.
  • Inspects and reports physical condition of building and equipment on a monthly basis.
  • Performs incidental work as required such as unloading and storing supplies, clearing sidewalks of ice and snow, and assisting in special clean-up activities.
  • Performs various maintenance duties when required, including assembling and disassembling furniture or other various tasks.
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
  • Operates equipment including, but not limited to floor scrubbing machines, floor buffers, wet dry vacuums, and snow blowers.
  • Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
  • This position is considered essential personnel and works as part of the emergency response preparedness for the City of Laurel and is designated as "priority one" classification.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  • Willingly and cooperatively accepts other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES - None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - The minimum eligibility requirements for this position are as follows:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE - Possession of a high school diploma or GED Certificate or one year of related custodial experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the essential requirements of work.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS - Must possess a current and valid Class "C" Real ID Maryland Driver's License or a comparable driver's license issued by the employee's state of residence, and a proven safe driving record. Completion of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) command courses required by the City Office of Emergency Management within six (6) months of employment with the City.
