Job Title: AI Resident

The AI Resident role within the Pieces Artificial Intelligence Residency (PAIR) Program provides a unique opportunity to accelerate your career in applied artificial intelligence (AI) for advancing healthcare. This 6-12 month residency is designed for those eager to gain hands-on experience in developing cutting-edge healthcare AI systems. Whether your goal is to build a career as an applied AI scientist in the healthcare industry or prepare for advanced studies in medical informatics or data science, this program is an ideal fit.

As an AI Resident, you will work alongside world-class applied AI scientists, physician scientists, data scientists, and engineers to develop AI algorithms, pipelines, and healthcare AI applications. You ll contribute to impactful projects such as AI-driven note generation for doctors, clinical summarization for hand-off processes, predictive modeling for outcomes like hospital length of stay, and more.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on the development of an end-to-end AI engine, contributing to various modules and functions across the system.

  • Assist in scaling infrastructure for generative AI, including prompt engineering efforts in collaboration with physicians.

  • Understand and implement data models that connect the AI engine to other system components, including user interfaces, outbound delivery systems, and data analytics platforms.

  • Conduct data analysis, extraction, cleaning, and feature engineering for tasks such as predictive modeling, evaluation, and visualization.

  • Assist with the development of machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and other algorithmic components.

  • Collaborate with mentors to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the work and receive guidance as needed.

Requirements

We re looking for an AI Resident who s passionate about using technology to help the most vulnerable. You re someone who believes the right data can help build better one-to-one relationships with communities in need of extra support. You have expertise in the following areas:

  • Bachelor s degree or higher in computer science, data science, engineering, or a related field.

  • Significant coursework or completed projects in data science, mathematics, statistics, or AI.

  • Prior work or research experience in a related field is a plus.

  • Strong programming skills in Python.

  • Strong motivation in the AI and generative AI domains.

  • Experience applying AI assistants in coding, writing, and other development work.

  • Familiarity with the advantages and limitations of different foundation models.

  • Experience developing large language model (LLM)-based applications or projects.

  • Knowledge of machine learning, deep learning, informatics, or statistical methods, and their application in healthcare AI.

  • Experience with databases and natural language processing (NLP) is a plus.

  • Strong ability to self-manage, set goals, and meet commitments.

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Proficiency in team-based work and communication tools (e.g., Google Docs, Sheets).

  • Proficiency with Linux and macOS operating systems.
