Acceptable Experience And Training

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture; and
  • Extensive experience in building design, construction, renovation or related work.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen;
  • Possession of a valid Iowa driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility;
  • State of Iowa Professional Architectural license.

Examples Of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Supervises and participates in the development of architectural projects from inception to completion;
  • Certifies and seals architectural documents produced by City staff as required;
  • Researches, assesses and assimilates facility needs for various Departments throughout the City system;
  • Provides technical support in developing Capital Improvement Project budgets for specific projects;
  • Performs design services and coordinates projects, including hiring consultants, establishing the physical shape and features of the projects, establishing the budget, and coordinating the work of other City departments, outside engineering consultants and Engineering Department staff;
  • Develops construction documents and technical specifications suitable for competitive bids by general contractors, including supervising consultants and in-house staff and ensures compliance with all applicable building codes and ADA requirements;
  • Reviews architectural projects completed either in-house or by outside architectural firms;
  • Monitors and records results of improvements to City facilities;
  • Works with boards and commissions as necessary, representing the interests of the City in architectural and project design;
  • Provides needed information and direction concerning how to perform certain tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
