Job Overview

The Safety Supervisor for the DOT fleet is responsible for overseeing the safety and compliance programs of the company's Department of Transportation (DOT) regulated fleet. This position ensures that the fleet adheres to all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including DOT regulations and safety standards, while fostering a culture of safety within the organization. The Safety Manager will implement, monitor, and continuously improve the fleet safety and compliance programs, reduce risk, and enhance the overall safety performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety programs and policies that ensure compliance with DOT regulations (FMCSA, HOS, CSA, etc.).
  • Monitor, audit, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local transportation safety regulations.
  • Conduct safety inspections of fleet vehicles to ensure all DOT requirements are met.
  • Lead the investigation of accidents and incidents, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Oversee the development and execution of driver training programs, focusing on safety, regulatory compliance, and defensive driving.
  • Monitor driver qualification files, drug and alcohol testing programs, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  • Track and report safety performance metrics, including accidents, near misses, and unsafe behaviors, identifying trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Manage safety communications, ensuring drivers are informed of policy changes, safety alerts, and new regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments, proactively identifying potential hazards or areas for improvement.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies regarding safety and compliance matters.
  • Manage DOT compliance audits and maintain documentation for inspections.
  • Ensure accurate records of driver logs, Hours of Service (HOS), vehicle maintenance, and safety violations are maintained.
  • Promote and enhance a safety culture by engaging drivers and staff in continuous safety improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Safety Supervisor(DOT) Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Transportation, Logistics, or a related field (preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in fleet safety management, preferably in a DOT-regulated environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations, including FMCSA, CSA, and HOS requirements.
  • Proven experience conducting safety audits, inspections, and investigations.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and promote a safety-first culture.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with fleet management and safety software.
  • Certified Director of Safety (CDS) or similar safety certification (preferred).
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel as needed.
