The Role:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical individual to join our finance team as a Project Accountant. The ideal candidate will have experience in project finance and revenue recognition, with proficiency in NetSuite, Sage, SAP or any similar ERP systems. The Project Accountant will play a critical role in ensuring accurate project costing, monitoring project financial performance, and optimizing profitability.

Requirements

In this role, you will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Project Costing: Collaborate with project managers and other stakeholders to establish accurate project budgets and cost estimates. Monitor and analyze project costs throughout the project lifecycle, identifying variances and implementing corrective actions as needed along with insights for cost optimization.
  • Revenue Recognition: Ensure compliance with revenue recognition standards (e.g., ASC 606) by accurately recognizing revenue and associated costs for projects. Review contracts and project agreements to determine appropriate revenue recognition methods and timelines.
  • Financial Analysis: Conduct financial analysis of projects, including profitability analysis, margin analysis, and variance analysis. Provide insights and recommendations to management to optimize project profitability and resource allocation.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and analyze financial reports related to project performance, including project P&L statements, cost-to-complete reports, variance analysis, budget vs. actuals reports, and cash flow projections. Communicate financial results and insights to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner. Ensure timely and accurate reporting in accordance with company policies and GAAP.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Assist in the development of project budgets and forecasts. Collaborate with project managers and other stakeholders to provide financial guidance and support throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Cost Control: Implement and maintain cost control procedures to monitor project expenses and mitigate risks. Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in cost accounting processes.
  • Inventory Management: Oversee inventory costing processes, including valuation, reconciliation, and inventory reserve analysis. Work closely with operations and procurement teams to optimize inventory management practices.
  • Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate and improve project accounting processes and procedures to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and control. Identify opportunities for automation and streamlining of workflows.
  • ERP System Management: Utilize ERP system to record project-related transactions, maintain project budgets and forecasts, and generate relevant financial reports. Provide training and support to end-users as needed.
  • Compliance and Audit Support: Ensure compliance with accounting principles, company policies, internal costs, and regulatory requirements related to project accounting and revenue recognition. Support internal and external audits by providing documentation and explanations as needed.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, procurement, and project management, to support cost-related initiatives and provide financial insights to drive informed decision-making.

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in job costing, project finance, or related roles.
  • Strong understanding of revenue recognition principles (e.g., ASC 606).
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in cost accounting principles, financial analysis and reporting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
  • Proven ability to drive process improvements and implement best practices.
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
