Dr. Glen Barber’s Laboratory, situated within the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) and the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO), is devoted to studying cellular sensing mechanisms that trigger host defense countermeasures in response to microbial infection. This has included his discovery of a signaling pathway controlled by a new innate immune regulator referred to as STING (stimulator of interferon genes) that is activated by DNA based microbes such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites. He is interested in developing viral oncolytic agents and immunotherapeutic for the treatment of cancer and understanding the role of innate immunity & the control of cancer and Understanding mechanisms of inflammation associated cancer.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the Barber Lab as a Researcher 3 at the OSUCCC and PIIO. The Researcher 3 will function as a mouse animal model research scientist to lead in vivo research efforts. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, executing, and analyzing experiments involving transgenic and knockout mouse models. This role is essential to advancing the lab's research goals, with a particular focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms of disease and developing novel therapeutic strategies.

Essential Duties Breakdown

  • Develop, maintain, and oversee mouse colonies, including transgenic, knockout, and xenograft models.
  • Plan and conduct in vivo experiments related to disease models (e.g., cancer, viral infections) and therapeutic interventions, ensuring scientific rigor and reproducibility.
  • Develop and optimize protocols for drug administration, tissue collection, and other experimental techniques.
  • Maintain detailed records of mouse colonies, including genotyping and phenotyping.
  • Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines for animal research.
  • Ensure all research complies with institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) protocols and other regulatory standards.
  • Perform biological assays, collect and analyze data, and interpret results from in vivo studies.
  • Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, including molecular biologists, immunologists, and clinicians.
  • Contribute to the writing of scientific manuscripts and present findings at internal and external meetings.

  • Strong experience in animal model research, including handling, breeding, genotyping, and disease model development.
  • Proficiency in animal surgery, drug administration (IV, IP, SC), and tissue/organ collection.
  • Expertise in immunological assays (e.g., flow cytometry, ELISA) and molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience with data analysis software (e.g., GraphPad Prism, R).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced research environment.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in cancer immunology or virology.
  • Familiarity with CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing in animal models.
