Job Description

Job Title

Client: US Geological Survey (USGS) Geological Hazards Science Center (GHSC)

Location: Denver/Golden, CO Preferred Remote if candidate is exceptional

Travel: Occasional travel may be required if not local to Golden, CO

Citizenship: US or Green Card / Permanent Resident as long as they can pass a Background Investigation

Overview:

The USGS Geologic Hazards Science Center (GHSC) Geomagnetism Program is an integrated effort which provides real-time geomagnetic data to customers at the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), U.S. Air Force, NASA, and other agencies for operational monitoring of space-weather conditions, to a variety of international partners through the INTERMAGNET consortium, and to the public through the Geomagnetism Program website. Since fiscal year 2020, the Geomagnetism Program has received appropriated funds for collection, quality control, processing and archiving of magnetotelluric (MT) data. These data fill a critical need for accurate estimation of ground-level geoelectric fields, which determine the extent to which space weather hazards affect the Nation s electric power grid operations. Accurate real-time estimation of ground-level geoelectric fields, currently operational at SWPC, informs the industry s response to space weather events and allows for timely mitigation of geomagnetically induced currents, preventing damaging power failures. Geoelectric field estimation, as well as validation of such methods, relies on high quality MT data equipped with properly curated metadata. Once properly curated, the MT data is archived through the EarthScope Consortium Data Services. The Contractor shall be tasked with streamlining and formalizing the USGS MT data archiving workflow, which includes, but is not limited to, the user interfaces and data visualization components, for long-period MT systems and with extending that workflow to wideband MT systems, collecting intermittently and at higher frequency. The overarching goal is to improve efficiency of MT data handling, archiving, and dissemination for the USGS Geomagnetism Program.

The candidate will support the tasks related to planning, configuring, and implementing complex data management and archiving systems. The candidate will participate in the design, maintenance, and upgrade of interfaces and software systems to meet the needs of the Geomagnetism Program as well as documentation of these systems. The candidate will work within a team consisting of USGS Geomagnetism Program, and Information Technology (IT) personnel, following USGS and engineering best-practices to ensure consistency with the larger GHSC infrastructure and external community requirements. The candidate will also closely collaborate with the EarthScope Consortium and their contractors and with other selected technical experts on the data archiving formats and practices.

Qualifications and Tasks:

The candidate must have experience with Linux/Unix systems and shell scripting, Python, and Git/Subversion or other collaborative software revision control and configuration management software. Experience with Matlab and/or compiled languages (e.g., Fortran) is highly beneficial. Experience with JavaScript is preferred.

The candidate will be required to report verbally on progress during weekly meetings with a team of technical experts selected by the USGS Geomagnetism Program. Priorities and coordination of the work required will be discussed, and milestones will be established as needed. The candidate

will solicit feedback, as needed, from Geomagnetism Program or selected technical experts concerning software operability and functionality throughout the software development cycle. The work will undergo code review and testing, as needed, by Geomagnetism Program and/or selected technical experts to ensure it meets required standards and functionality. The candidate will also provide detailed documentation or update existing documentation regarding all aspects of the program.

The candidate will provide support to the USGS Geomagnetism Program with tasks including but not limited to:

  • Streamline, update, and finalize software, applications, and documentation related to Geomagnetism Program MT data and metadata curation and archival by:
  • Creating new and/or modifying existing software or applications to automate or assist with automation of data and metadata curation, management, and/or archival of Geomagnetism Program MT data.
  • Creating new interfaces and software systems to better visualize, curate and manage Geomagnetism Program MT data.
  • Adaptation of the existing MT data archiving workflow to accommodate intermittent and/or high frequency wideband MT time series, following the EarthScope Consortium metadata standards and protocols.
  • Development and maintenance of documentation that details the existing, as well as developing, data curation and archival practices.
  • Maintaining documentation related to any scripts, codes, or configurations generated or modified.
  • Submitting code for review to Geomagnetism Program and/or HazDev staff, as needed, throughout the development cycle.
  • Providing support as required in the form of oral or written presentations and/or documentation at such places designated by the Government.

Provide operational support to the USGS Geomagnetism Program by:

  • Performing MT data time series and/or transfer function curation and archival with EarthScope Consortium as requested.
