Job Description

General Summary:

Develops and oversees volunteer service activity throughout Lurie Children’s. Manages a team of employees and insures standards of excellence in the recruitment, placement, supervision, performance and engagement of volunteers. Serves as a point of contact and liaison to Lurie Children’s leaders and departments in matters involving volunteer service.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Leads a team of professional volunteer program coordinators in overseeing the volunteer program. Selects, trains, directs, and develops staff, and has the authority to hire, separate, promote, demote, write and administer performance evaluations. Supports the professional development and continuing education of direct reports. Coaches staff in working with interdisciplinary teams throughout the institution in matters related to volunteer service.
  • Cultivates collaborative relationships with leaders and staff in departments throughout the institution where volunteer service is present, requested or needed. Applies knowledge of best practices and trends in healthcare volunteerism to develop volunteer roles that support institution operations and the patient family experience, and that are appropriate for volunteer involvement.
  • Oversees all aspects of recruitment, screening, placement and performance management of volunteers who serve in patient-facing and other support roles at all Lurie Children’s locations. Coordinates efforts with leaders who manage other types of volunteer roles in support of Lurie Children’s mission (e.g., Lurie Children’s Foundation, Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities, contracted external organization volunteers).
  • Leads Lurie Children’s in developing an environment that is welcoming, supportive and rewarding to volunteers. Serves as primary liaison and driver when new or complex volunteer service opportunities are being developed or evaluated.
  • Serves as primary liaison and operational partner with departmental leaders who administer regulatory, safety and legal requirements that apply to volunteers – e.g., Legal Services, Compliance, Human Resources, Infection Prevention, Patient Safety, and Patient Family Experience.
  • Structures volunteer onboarding and continuing education to assure a high level of volunteer performance and adherence to patient safety, compliance and legal standards. Develops, implements (or delegates implementation) and monitors the effectiveness of operational procedures related to volunteer activity.
  • Manages donor relations as they relate to volunteer services, and partners closely with Foundation staff and leaders in engaging volunteer donors in appropriate, rewarding roles that adhere to established standards for volunteering within the institution.
  • Collaborates with the Director to develop, implement and monitor a fiscally sound budget. Controls departmental operations spending and philanthropic donation fund use related to the volunteer program. Reports on budget variance, and responsibly stewards resources in relation to fluctuations in volumes and priorities.
  • Participates in operational and strategic planning as a member of the Family Services leadership team. May take on project-based or periodic leadership responsibilities beyond the scope of volunteer management that fall within the scope of Family Services. Meeting departmental needs and expectations may involve other duties as assigned by leadership.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the field of volunteer program coordination or management, preferably in a healthcare or other highly-regulated setting.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities typically acquired through the acquisition of a bachelor’s or master's degree in human resources, non-profit management, healthcare administration, or related field.
  • Ability to coordinate and integrate complex processes and relationships in an evolving role, and to evaluate responsibilities and processes with recommendations for improvement.
  • Ability to increase knowledge and expertise, maintain competency, and advance as a leader through self-directed learning.
  • Ability to coach a team in identifying problems, formulating plans, initiating and executing corrective measures, and ensuring outcomes.
  • Ability to promote a positive work environment that encourages retention and staff development, and is characterized by high quality service to constituents and a positive team dynamic.
  • Excellent communication, strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment and critical reasoning skills. Ability to translate concepts into actions and routinely make daily operational decisions including urgent situations.
  • Ability to think proactively, act creatively, and take initiative appropriately. Demonstrated ability to work as a part of multiple teams and achieve objectives within a large organization.
