Job Description
PRIMORIS POWER DELIVERY IS ON POINT IN 2024

With over 70 years of operating experience, Primoris Power Delivery services include engineering and design, installation and maintenance, material and equipment procurement, repair of electrical transmission, distribution, substation, wireless communication, and storm restoration. Our experience ranges from small engineering and consulting projects to multi-million dollar turn-key distribution, substation, and transmission line programs.

The Position Proposition:

We are seeking an Expert Power Estimator to support Edison Power Constructors. A High-Voltage, Expert Estimator is a critical role in power infrastructure projects, responsible for accurately determining the financial and logistical needs of complex electrical installations. They analyze project plans, conduct site evaluations, and leverage industry knowledge to develop comprehensive cost estimates and competitive bids. The estimator acts as a bridge between technical requirements and financial feasibility, ensuring projects are accurately scoped and competitively positioned for successful execution.

The Expert Power Estimator role is based in St Paul, MN (Projects outside area as needed including other states).

Project Bidding & Estimating:

  • Review project documents: Thoroughly analyze RFPs (Requests for Proposals), drawings (including single line diagrams, layouts, and schematics), specifications, and contract terms for high-voltage projects.
  • Conduct site visits: Travel to project locations to assess existing conditions, take measurements, identify potential obstacles, and determine material logistics.
  • Material takeoff and pricing: Accurately quantify material requirements (cable, transformers, switchgear, insulators, etc.) from project plans and specifications. Research and obtain quotes from suppliers for competitive pricing.
  • Labor estimates: Determine the labor hours required for different project phases (installation, testing, commissioning) based on historical data, crew productivity, and project complexity.
  • Subcontractor coordination: Solicit and evaluate bids from subcontractors specializing in specific high-voltage tasks (e.g., grounding, civil works, specialized testing). Negotiate pricing and scope of work.
  • Develop detailed cost breakdowns: Create comprehensive cost estimates that include material, labor, subcontracting, permits, transportation, overheads, and contingencies.
  • Prepare bid packages: Assemble all necessary documentation, including cost breakdowns, project timelines, and company qualifications, for submission to clients.
  • Risk assessment: Identify potential risks and uncertainties associated with the project (e.g., material lead times, weather, regulatory changes) and factor contingency plans and costs into estimates.

Beyond Estimating:

  • Project handover: Work closely with project managers and field personnel to ensure a smooth transition from the bidding phase to project execution.
  • Cost tracking and analysis: Monitor project costs during execution, compare actual costs against estimates, and identify any deviations or potential for overruns.
  • Industry knowledge: Stay updated on industry standards (IEEE, NEC), safety regulations (OSHA), emerging technologies, and market trends in the high-voltage sector.
  • Software proficiency: Be proficient with estimating software, spreadsheets, project management tools, and potentially CAD/BIM software to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Important Considerations:

    • Safety: High-voltage work is inherently dangerous. Estimators must have a strong understanding of safety protocols and ensure estimates adequately account for safety equipment, training, and procedures.
    • Precision: Accuracy is crucial. Errors in estimation can lead to significant financial losses or project delays.
    • Communication: Effective communication with clients, engineers, project managers, subcontractors, and suppliers is essential for successful project outcomes.
    • Travel Requirements: Be prepared to travel for site visits, meetings with clients, and coordination with subcontractors. Flexibility in scheduling and the ability to accommodate travel logistics are crucial for successful project execution.
Educational & Minimum Requirements:
  • Associates degree is preferred, but not required.
  • Journeyman Lineman Experience: A minimum of 8+ years of experience as a journeyman lineman is required to ensure a strong understanding of high-voltage systems and procedures.
  • Utility Experience: Previous experience working for Xcel Energy or similar utilities is preferred, as it demonstrates familiarity with utility operations, standards, and expectations.
  • Line Work (Distribution, Substation, Transmission) preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Detail-oriented and able to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ability to travel for site visits, meetings with clients, and coordination with subcontractors (travel requirements >50%).
