Database Administrator (DBA)

King Of Prussia, PA, US | Full-Time, Remote Work (Onsite if Preferred)

Position Overview: We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) to manage, maintain, and optimize our database systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in database management, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a passion for ensuring the performance, integrity, and security of our data. You will be responsible for supervising and developing our Junior DBA / Reporting Engineer. Our environment is primarily MSSQL. No clusters, no Azure instances, no big data. Our largest tables are less than 50 million rows of data. We are in a constant state of change, which means in addition to the new concepts and requirements, there are things that are no longer being used. You will need to monitor table and stored procedure usage, and develop a plan to remove objects that are no longer in use.

You will be working closely with our software developers in order to achieve our business needs. Communication, documentation and diplomacy skills will be used on a daily basis. Our systems are in use 24/7, being able to react to issues outside of the 9 to 5 is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Database Management:

    • Install and upgrade SQL Server installations.

    • Execute backups, restores, recovery models, and database maintenance tasks.

    • Review, approve, implement requests for new tables, stored procedures, triggers, indexes.

  • Performance Tuning and Optimization:

    • Monitor performance and troubleshoot problems to ensure database uptime.

    • Troubleshoot and resolve database integrity issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, connectivity issues, and security issues.

    • Address SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space, and other resource contention issues.

    • Optimize SQL queries and database schemas for performance improvements using tools like Performance Monitor, SQL Profiler, and other related monitoring and troubleshooting tools.

  • Security Management:

    • Implement and manage company data management and security practices and policies.

    • Ensure data integrity and consistency by implementing database constraints, triggers, and validation checks.

  • Development Support:

    • Assist with schema design, code review, and SQL query tuning.

    • Write and troubleshoot SQL code and designs, including stored procedures, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, and constraints.

    • Perform index maintenance and manage log shipping and/or database replication.

  • Reporting and Integration:

    • Develop, deploy, and support SSIS packages.

    • Develop and deploy SSRS reports.

    • Develop, deploy, and support SSAS cubes.

  • Collaboration and Guidance:

    • Provide guidance and support to Application Developers.

    • Work closely with developers, system administrators, and other IT professionals to design and implement database solutions that meet business needs.

  • Documentation:

    • Maintain comprehensive documentation for database configurations, processes, and procedures.

    • Prepare reports on database performance, incidents, and improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).

  • Experience: Proven experience as a Database Administrator or similar role, with hands-on experience in SQL Server. Familiarity with other database management systems is a plus.

  • Skills:

    • Strong proficiency in SQL and database management.

    • Experience with database backup and recovery techniques.

    • Knowledge of database design and normalization.

    • Understanding of performance tuning and optimization.

    • Experience with Performance Monitor, Redgate, and related tools.

    • Ability to develop, deploy, and support SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS/

  • Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and strong communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Certifications (optional but preferred): DBA certifications (Microsoft Certified Database Administrator, etc.) are a plus.
