About Columbia Energy & Environmental Services:

Columbia Energy and Environmental Services is an established small business headquartered in Richland, WA. We offer full-service engineering, design, fabrication, instrumentation and controls, and technology development. We are currently seeking a Principal Structural Engineer for our Idaho Falls, ID location.

Position Overview:

We are looking for a Principal Structural Engineer with at least 15 years of experience. This role offers opportunities to serve as a design engineer, project engineer, technical lead, and discipline lead on design/build/test projects. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, overseeing less experienced staff and leading various projects. Experience with fabrication projects is essential. Project Manager experience is preferred but not required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, evaluate, and test unique solutions for nuclear and hazardous waste remediation, chemical processing, and commercial development projects.
  • Conduct design analysis per established codes and standards (e.g., AISC, ASCE).
  • Design lifting fixtures and tooling.
  • Perform structural calculations to verify equipment design and installations.
  • Support multiple projects and project teams across WA, ID, and other locations.
  • Collaborate with designers to produce detailed design drawings.
  • Generate test plans/procedures and support system testing.
  • Maintain configuration and control of baseline drawings and documents.
  • Communicate task status, progress, and technical issues effectively.
  • Review project design inputs, outputs, and deliverables for compliance with applicable standards and contract requirements.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers and staff.
  • Act as discipline lead for structural engineering on various projects.
  • Oversee and coordinate with fabrication teams to ensure project specifications and timelines are met.
  • Ensure safety in office and shop environments.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor s degree or higher from an ABET accredited university.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience with IBC, AISC, ACI standards.
  • Proficient with FEA software such as Ansys, Risa3D.
  • Self-starter with focus on project needs and delivery schedules.
  • Ability to plan work activities and estimate task durations.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce design deliverables.
  • Team player with excellent attention to detail.
  • Willingness to take on new challenges and learn new skills.
  • Our company works with United States government contracts and will require proof of U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain Government clearance.
  • Experience in fabrication projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered Professional Engineer.
  • ASME NQA-1 experience.
  • DOE experience.
  • Experience at a nuclear facility.
  • Project Management experience.

Working Conditions:

This position is primarily based in an office environment with occasional work in the company s Fabrication Shop and off-site locations. Occasional travel may be required, including travel to our WA facility.
