Job Description:
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Cytology Supervisor to oversee the cytology facet of our laboratory. The successful candidate will use microscopic examinations to accurately interpret and classify gynecological and non-gynecological cytology specimens. Responsibilities include preparing specimens for analysis, performing testing procedures, and documenting results to ensure accuracy and reliability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate non-gynecological cytology preparations, including smears, concentrated cell preparations, cell blocks, and fine needle aspirates (FNAs), according to established protocols.
- Screen gynecological smears for atypical cells and classify cases using the Bethesda system.
- Finalize reports on normal gynecological cases promptly.
- Refer non-gynecological and atypical gynecological cases to a pathologist for final diagnosis.
- Prepare non-gynecological cytology specimens, including smears, cytocentrifugations, and cell blocks.
- Accession, log, and charge all cytology specimens.
- Perform necessary computer operations for each step.
- Assist with the collection of FNA specimens to determine adequacy, including rapid on-site staining.
- Maintain current knowledge of technical advances in cytotechnology.
- Follow established infection control practices and quality assurance standards.
- Develop protocols and maintain records for quality assurance and workload.
- Adhere to federal regulations (HCFA and CLIA) regarding workload restraints.
- Observe safety policies and universal precautions for specimen handling and disposal.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Refer persistent problems to the Histology Section Head, Administrative Director of Laboratory Services, or Director of Laboratories.
- Train new employees in cytology work performance in collaboration with the Histology Section Head.
- Expertise in Pathology and Histology.
- SNAS experience.
- Non-gynecological (non-gyn) experience.
- Minimum of 2+ years of experience.
- Associate’s degree in science or related field.
- Intermediate level of experience.
- Strong communication and coordination skills.
- Ability to train and supervise staff.
- Knowledge of federal regulations and quality assurance standards.
- Proficiency in computer operations related to cytology.
