Job Description Summary

As a Lead Engineer in Combustion Research, you will work individually and in teams to develop, test and validate cutting-edge gas turbine combustion technology to support GE Vernova and its industry and government customers.

At Vernova Advanced Research, we invent and develop transformational technologies that will enable a clean and sustainable new era of energy. Combustion engineers develop innovative solutions to enable low-emission combustion of sustainable fuels, including hydrogen and hydrogen blends, as well as leverage high performance computing to predict and analyze combustion dynamics.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

In this role, you will:
  • Work with technicians and engineers to design and install new experimental hardware;
  • Perform high-pressure and temperature combustion experiments and analyze results;
  • Work with other engineers in developing new combustion models and analysis tools;
  • Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team of product engineers, research team members, and external partners to invent and mature the next generation of combustion technology.
  • Contribute to the development and writing of internal and external proposals
  • Establish and grow an external network of collaborators in academia, government, and industry.
  • Patent your inventions and develop a record of publication via conferences and peer reviewed journals.


Required Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree in Mechanical, Energy, Energy Systems or related discipline with a minimum of 3 years of professional experience OR Master's degree in Mechanical, Energy, Energy Systems or related discipline with a minimum of 5 years of professional experience.
  • Graduate-level knowledge of combustion, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and combustion chemistry.
  • Experience in designing and testing prototype hardware.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with LabView or similar software.
  • Background in performing combustion experiments and theoretical analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to process and analyze large data sets using python and MATLAB.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Desired Characteristics:
  • Experience in gas turbine combustion and emissions, including one or more of: fuel/air premixing systems, autoignition, flame propagation in complex fuel mixtures, combustion kinetics & chemistry, thermo-acoustic instabilities (combustion dynamics), design and evaluation of new combustion systems, and modeling of combustion systems.
  • Peer reviewed journal publications.
  • Experience working with high-pressure, high-temperature combustion experiments
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interface with senior leaders and customers with clarity and confidence.
