Job Summary
The University Analytics & Institutional Reporting ( UAIR ) office houses a transformational group of data professionals that turn complex university data into meaningful, highly valued information, trusted by university leadership to drive strategic decisions and generate official figures reported to regulatory, external and public agencies.
As a member of the team, you'll work with campus leadership to to gain an understanding of their information needs, delivering thoughtful solutions, and wrangling data with care. The successful candidate brings a strong set of analytical skills, and knows the detail of the data while easily synthesizing and communicating it at a macro level. You'll help connect dots and communicate insights about the university's strategic progress.

Like many areas at the University of Utah, our office is primarily a remote-work environment. As such, it is intended that this position will be fully remote, though the opportunity for occasional in-person meetings on campus will arise. Ideally, some initial training and onboarding could be in-person. We expect to continue our remote-work arrangements and will review this annually. More details can be discussed in an interview. Our office is not currently able to support individuals seeking sponsorship for visa-living in and working from the U.S. is a requirement.

Responsibilities

- Liaise with leadership and the UAIR teams

- Help translate leadership vision into strategic direction and tactical reporting requirements

- Carry out exploratory analysis to discover reporting requirements and help drive scope, requirement and design decisions

- Support delivery of the full end-to-end reporting, including

o Solicit, analyze and document requirements
o Data profiling/research
o Identify potential solutions
o Develop and prototype dashboards and reports
o Solicit feedback
o Training and documentation
o Priority and project management

- Share your ideas and knowledge, be open to learning from others, and grow with the team as we explore new ideas, methods and tools in our journey of continuous forward progress.
Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in area of specialty and 4-6 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

- Adept at establishing collaborative relationships, can thoughtfully and productively communicate with and support the contributions of individuals at all levels of the organization, from senior leaders to technical developers and non-technical analysts

- Demonstrated acumen in driving decisions and promoting continuous improvement

- Ability to see the big picture and think strategically while operating at a detailed tactical level

- Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Microsoft Power Bi, etc.

- Intermediate SQL skills or willingness to learn

- Knowledge of how upstream data capture, business processes, data models and flows, training, tools, and other factors influence reporting capabilities, accuracy and sustainability

- Experience with strategies that deliver flexible, adaptable, scalable reporting solutions

- Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences

- Experience with strategic planning and reporting in higher education, with an understanding of state and federal compliance reporting requirements

- Experience with external reporting such as IPEDS and ranking surveys (US News, etc.)

- Experience at a public R1 institution or AAU institution

- Proficiency in Oracle SQL Developer, PeopleSoft, Tableau, Lucid Chart, Excel, and/or similar relational database and ERP systems, visualization and diagramming and spreadsheet tools

- 4 or more years of experience in any of the following areas:

o Business systems analysis with a strong understanding of data and process flows, liaising with functional and technical groups, auditing data, troubleshooting and issue resolution
o Data reporting and analysis, building queries from large relational databases to audit data, perform ad hoc analysis, generate standard reports, and deliver meaningful results
o Relational database or data warehouse concepts with an aptitude for understanding underlying requirements and identifying strategies to deliver sound solutions
o Higher education administration with specific knowledge in financial or student data

- A Master's degree in a related field
