Job Summary:

The Food Safety Director is responsible for oversight of all regulatory and quality assurance programs and for ensuring the quality and safety of supplied goods. A strong background in manufacturing, quality assurance, global food safety certification standards, and FDA and USDA requirements is a must. This role is remote and will support 4 locations in Longview, TX, Melbourne, FL, Middletown, PA, and Charlotte, NC. Ideal candidates will be based within one of the listed areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to development and execution of product food safety and quality programs to support the organization’s goals of operational excellence, customer/client satisfaction, and market leadership.
  • Responsible for assisting in the development and ongoing maintenance of the Food Safety Plan. Identifies deficiencies and implements new strategies.
  • Ensures all HACCP, GMP’s, sanitation preventive controls, supply chain preventive controls and all other prerequisite food safety standards are met according to USDA, FDA, certification body and corporate requirements.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of the facilities process flow and engage QA personnel in all areas of food safety and quality within the flow.
  • Oversees and supports all food safety audits/certifications conducted by government and third-party agencies.
  • Supports investigation process and responses to customer safety and quality concerns as needed.
  • Oversight of product shelf-life program.
  • Support implementation of new technologies.
  • Coverage for staffing needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 10 years of directly related experience required in Quality Assurance and Food Safety manufacturing role.
  • Approximately 60% travel required throughout FL, NC, PA, and TX; travel may be varied and require trips of 2 weeks long at a time
  • B.S. degree in food technology, food science, or related curriculum preferred.
  • HACCP program development and FSMA Preventive Control program development experience.
  • HACCP certification, Preventive Controls for Human Food (PCQI), and Seafood HACCP is a must.
  • Global Standard for Food Safety (GFSI) practitioner is required; Safe Quality Food (SQF) certification is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of required third party audit and GFSI audit scheme programs and standards.
  • Solid understanding of food processing and distribution regulations, i.e. FDA and USDA/FSIS, and best industry practices.
  • Track record of food safety/QA success in any of the following focus areas a plus: prepared foods (preferred)meat, poultry, seafood, processed foods, distribution, proprietary/private-label product development and/or monitoring.
  • Experience developing and motivating personnel.
  • Ability to function optimally within a fast-paced, diverse and evolving environment is necessary.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn various software and web-enabled programs.
  • Must be a strong, persuasive communicator and coach, with the ability to relate to other professionals, peers, and field operators, both technical and non-technical.
  • Strong data management, reporting, and technical writing skills.
