Job Purpose

Executing impactful, mission-aligned events focused on seamless planning and ground-level production is vital to Howard University's brand and community engagement efforts. The Event Specialist supports diverse tasks related to the meticulous planning, execution, and management of university events, ensuring operational excellence and high-quality outcomes.

Nature And Scope

Reporting to the Director, Events Management, the Event Specialist functions within a busy planning team that executes a wide range of events on behalf of the division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) and the University. The position may have responsibilities that require outreach to internal contacts including administrators, faculty, students, and staff, as well as external contacts such as vendors, consultants, campus visitors, volunteers, and the general public. Teamwork and collaboration both across the University and with other development staff and alumni relations are essential.

Principal Accountabilities

The role plays a crucial role in ground-level production of a wide range of events, requiring strong project management and communication skills. The Events Specialist establishes goals for planning meetings and makes recommendations when determining space, facility, and equipment needs. Acting as the principal liaison between internal administrators, event organizers, and campus partners, the Event Specialist oversees logistical support for all assigned events and coordinates the activities of multiple vendors.

To ensure the seamless execution of each event, the Event Specialist participates in feedback sessions, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement. Additional responsibilities include administrative assignments, purchasing supplies and equipment, and other related duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with event planning principles, requirements, and procedures;
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to establish priorities;
  • Ability to manage complex projects;
  • Familiarity with conference facilities, technology, and equipment;
  • Familiarity with university or large institutional purchasing principles, procedures, regulations, and standards;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings, as required; and
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and a high degree of discretion.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associates or bachelor’s degree required or minimum two (2) years relevant experience in hospitality, event planning or a closely related field.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Suite and technology specific to event planning preferred, including event design software, guest list management and other.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Compliance Salary Range Disclosure

Expected Pay Range: $59,090 - $65,000
