Job Description:

  • The Scientist will be part of a multi-disciplinary Innovation team supporting a variety of medical technologies and solutions with an initial focus on new drug delivery systems and development of interventional medical devices.
  • Reporting to a Senior Manager of Innovation, this is a technical position where the engineer will contribute significantly to exciting, high visibility projects and collaborations across the R&D portfolio.
  • This position will be responsible for the assessment, development, and testing of new technologies for a range of medical devices, including drug-device combination products.
  • The candidate is expected to design and execute experiments aimed at developing and characterizing formulations to improve our understanding of the drug-material-tissue interactions impacting the performance of medical devices.
  • Specific expertise sought is in the areas of formulation development using additives (e.g., viscosity modifiers, surfactant stabilizers, detergents, colloids, etc.), materials structure-property elucidation, experience with conjugation chemistry (e.g., fluorescent labelling), and controlled delivery of drugs, proteins and/or tissue permeation enhancers.
  • The Scientist must be able to effectively collaborate with team members from varying backgrounds and should have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • The successful candidate will have an interest in technically contributing to areas beyond medical devices and drug delivery systems over time due to the dynamic nature of the Innovation team and its programs.
  • Carry out experimental studies relating to the development, preparation, and evaluation of formulations for drug/device combination technology.
  • Provide expertise in drug formulation as it relates to delivery technologies (e.g., drug-biomaterials-tissue interactions, soft materials characterization, etc.).
  • Work with project team members to plan and execute technical assessments of formulations for medical device technologies and applications.
  • Investigate and resolve technical problems and manage different workstreams to meet program objectives and timelines.
  • Author/review SOPs, test/project reports, and other documents as required to execute studies in the laboratory.
  • Work with project team leadership to help ensure a smooth transition of projects from the Innovation phase to product development.

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Polymer Science, Textiles or related fields is required. Advanced degree is preferred.
  • Experience: PhD, MS + 2 years of relevant industry experience, or BS + 4 years of relevant industry experience is required.
  • Formulation development and characterization
  • Modification of existing formulations using additives (e.g., polymeric materials, viscosity modifiers, micro/nanoparticles, colloids, tissue permeation enhancers, etc.) and characterization to meet distinct performance criteria
  • Hands-on experience using analytical instrumentation and characterization tools
  • Ability to plan and conduct scientific experiments and effectively analyze, interpret, report, and present experimental results
  • Experience contributing to multidisciplinary teams including the ability to influence without direct reporting ties
  • Ability to translate an issue or problem statement into study strateg
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changes in program and project priorities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and team collaboration

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with conjugation chemistry (e.g., fluorescent labelling)
  • Experience developing controlled delivery methods for drugs/other small molecules/proteins
  • Synthesis of small and/or large molecules
  • Knowledge of drug delivery systems and/or medical device development
  • Working knowledge of drug delivery principles, ADME, PK/PD and drug elution studies
  • Structure-property characterization of soft materials
  • Experience translating formulation development activities to be compliant with aseptic processes.
  • The candidate is expected to work in a research lab environment and may require working with chemicals, in vivo models, and biological materials (blood, tissues, etc.)
