Job Description Summary
This role is within the Commercial Engines Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) Mechanical Design team in GE Aerospace's Engineering Division. The team is responsible for the design and development of CMC High-Pressure-Turbine Nozzles within the GE9X Commercial Turbofan engine which powers the Boeing 777X. The GE9X engine has achieved type certification, and the team is working towards projects supporting Entry-into-Service as well as other design & manufacturing improvements.

As the Staff Engineer, you will be the mechanical design focal for one of our HPT nozzles on the GE9X engine. This entails driving and supporting new analyses, design changes, or manufacturing changes needed to meet program requirements and ensuring different projects around durability maturation, fleet support, producibility, cost, and delivery stay intertwined. You will lead, mentor, and collaborate with several other design engineers, analysts, materials engineers, and manufacturing engineers in executing your priorities. You will also serve as a project manager and technical mentor for these team members, while getting help and support from your people leader, nozzle team lead, and other technical leaders.

In this position you will have a moderate level of autonomy, which will require high levels of operational judgement and ability to contribute to setting your own priorities. You will need to know how to assess your own capabilities as well as the team members who are supporting you. Additionally, it'll be important for you to communicate accomplishments and challenges with the team, your people leader, and other stakeholders.

Ceramic matrix composites are a relatively new technology in the aviation industry and GE Aerospace is using it as a centerpiece within our future jet propulsion strategies. This team continues to lean and iterate, and to be successful in this group you will need a high drive to solve problems that haven't been seen before and an open mind to learn and collaborate across diverse teams. This role presents an exciting opportunity to make significant impact to the future design and innovation of GE Aerospace's products.

Have awareness as to how work of own team contributes to our commercial programs, future programs, and the CMC Integrated Product Team. Foster awareness of market trends, competition, and how products are differentiated. Serve as a resource for executing best practices and delivering work considered high quality.

  • Contribute towards strategy, policy development, and invention disclosures for CMC and hot section technologies. Have working knowledge of competition and the factors that differentiate them in the market. Influence the need to collect new or different types of data and analysis to make decisions.

  • Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles while adhering to business standards, procedures, or program requirements. Act as interface between mechanical design and systems engineering teams. Use judgment to make decisions or solve moderately complex tasks or problems in areas component design, manufacturing, and program management. May use multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own team to arrive at decisions.

  • Own and review interface control documents (ICDs) relevant to the HPT nozzle design. Perform complex stack-ups for assembly, hot, and transient conditions. Collaborate and gain concurrence on results with adjacent hardware owners. Evaluate impacts of gap closures with thermal design and performance.

  • Perform reviews of non-conforming material and assess its ability to meet safety and program requirements. Provide feedback to manufacturing teams on data needed to make assessments, clarifying design requirements, helping with manufacturing root cause efforts, or expanding design limits. Some travel to Asheville, NC manufacturing facility may be necessary.

  • Support ground engine testing or flight tests by reviewing hardware condition during testing and after completions or teardown. Document indications and make assessments of condition against manual limits. Build evidence by reviewing historical analysis & testing and propose and execute new component or engine tests to fill knowledge gaps. Some travel to Peebles, OH test facility or Durham, NC assembly facility may be necessary.

  • Manage project plans and action plans for executing on component durability, producibility, delivery, and cost objectives. Lead cross-functional teams through completion of deliverables. Communicate schedule pressures and delegate tasks appropriately. Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience. May lead small projects with moderate risks and resource requirements.
