Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is primarily responsible for managing the day to day operations of the general accounting, treasury services, accounts receivable and accounts payable. The Controller supervises timely completion of internal and external financials reporting and oversees timely statutory and statistical filings. The Controller manages relationships with independent auditors, tax preparers, investment consultants and managers, and bankers. The Controller coordinates and reviews preparation and filing of annual tax returns. Must live in Eastern or Central time zone.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees general ledger, accounts receivable and accounts payable duties on multiple accounting systems
  • Maintains and implements current finance and accounting standards
  • Prepares and analyzes external and internal financial reports
  • Oversees and reviews reconciliation of general ledger accounts
  • Manages preparation of quarterly and annual reports for regulatory agencies
  • Manages annual financial audits and occasional regulatory exams
  • Facilitates the budget process
  • Oversees month-end and quarterly closing (e.g. balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements)
  • Interacts with customers both internal and external including executive team, board members and other senior leadership
  • Responsible for leading the accounting staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements, Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • CPA certification preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • Experience in accounting and financial reporting for Property and Casualty Insurance industry required
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisor level experience preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with particular attention to detail
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Self-starter with solid time management skills
  • Strong computer aptitude which includes expertise with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) as well as experience with accounting software and general ledgers
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to work independently, but also able to work collaboratively with a team
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality when dealing with private company and employee data
