Job Summary

Under the direction of the Deputy General Manager of Retail Stores, supervise, direct and ,coordinate activities of the clothing department in the University Store; administer established policies and procedures applicable to efficient and profitable store operations; assist Store Management in such duties as may be assigned or delegated.

Responsibilities

Supervise, direct and coordinate activities of the clothing department in the University Store to include merchandising, ordering, display, damage claims, Loss Prevention, sales and inventory of departmental items, and compile, record, and report information as required for accurate and up-to-date departmental records, process incoming and outgoing forms, and documents according to operating procedures.

Ensure that the clothing department is adequately stocked with merchandise; order merchandise from Duke University Store's Distribution Center and vendors in sufficient quantity to meet customer demand; assist Stores’ management in ordering new and sale merchandise based on market trends, research, customer preferences and favorable vendor terms.

Track and analyze retail sales item data to anticipate item quantities and customer needs and changes to those needs, to ensure that merchandise is on hand in the manner, time frame and quantities needed to meet customer demand.

Assist in creating new inventory records, receiving incoming merchandise transfers, verifying packing slips for accuracy of quantities received, ensuring that all UPCs are properly linked in the NetSuite retail system, and verifying that all items are priced correctly with appropriate department codes. Work with the Distribution Center to ensure deliveries are made in a timely manner.

Organize merchandise on sales floor in a systematic, attractive, and easily accessible manner.

Receive deliveries according to procedures; verify quantities and items received against packing slips, invoices and purchase orders; ensure merchandise received is in good condition.

Price merchandise with correct price and department code; organize merchandise on sales floor in a systematic, attractive, and easily accessible manner.

Assist in preparation, execution, and oversight of annual physical inventories as scheduled, according to procedures. Take counts of sale, reduced, damaged and discounted merchandise; note markdown of merchandise and dispose of merchandise according to procedures. Ensure effective inventory control thru proper handling of cycle counts, price audits, mark-ups, and markdowns throughout Duke Stores.

Assist customers in the selection of products and recommend additional purchases; answer customer calls and inquiries and resolve customer complaints; monitor for shoplifting and take appropriate actions as needed in accordance with store policy.

Plan and schedule work for clothing department staff, ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space, and facilities for subsequent performance of tasks. Advise Stores’ management of current support status and make recommendations for the resolution of internal problems or scheduling inconsistencies.

Recommend various personnel functions relating to the clothing department operation including but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.

Operate point-of-sale cash register as needed, processing all forms of transactions.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications At This Level Education/Training:

High School Diploma required. Some college preferred. Work requires demonstrated communications, analytical, leadership and organizational skills.

Experience:

Work generally requires five years of experience in a retail, merchandising or similar business to acquire the experience and skills necessary to operate and supervise a successful high volume retail clothing department in an efficient, innovative and customer sensitive manner. Prefer retail supervisory experience. A combination of relevant experience and education will be considered.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a diverse and closeworking team in a fast-paced setting.
  • Quick learner with demonstrated problem-solving skills.

  • Some heavy lifting is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires knowledge of mathematical and accounting principles usually acquired through two years post secondary education in accounting or a related business field.

Experience

Work requires three years of clerical accounting or related experience to acquire practical knowledge of inventory transactions and record- keeping requirements. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
