This role has a hybrid work schedule (2 days per week in the office) and we will only consider candidates based in Boston, MA / Portsmouth, NH / Plano, TX and Indianapolis, IN.

Job introduction:

The US Retail Markets (USRM) is embarking on a multi-year business-led, technology-enabled transformation called Frontier. This program will transform USRM through radical simplification and acceleration of how we go to market, powered by a modern, future-ready unified insurance platform. We are seeking a Senior Scrum Master who will be responsible for the enablement and maturity growth of organizational agility of all the teams in their aligned program/portfolio. Influences parts of the organization (IT, Business, Architecture, Security, etc.) that interact with the teams in the program/portfolio they support to enable more effective flow of value for the organization. Demonstrates situational and self-awareness to know whether/when/how to respond to various environmental issues that will affect a team/program/portfolio/organization`s ability to operate in a Lean-Agile manner. Responsible for the professional/knowledge growth of less experienced SM`s and contributing to the overall agility subject matter expertise in the organization. Joins forces with other Sr. Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches working together to help the organization mature on the path towards business agility. Draws from vast experience in a variety of different contexts and leverages ideas from several disciplines, patterns and techniques to address gaps, solve problems, innovate and improve the environment their program/portfolio operates in.

About the job:
  • Responsible for forming and nurturing disciplined, cross-domain agile teams that embody the agile mindset by guiding them in agile principles and practices. Lead the development of standard JIRA processes and backlog organization for Frontier UIP, ensuring teams have essential data on burndown charts, velocity, capacity, backlog health, and delivery quality. Coach teams embrace change and agile principles, tackling resistance to guarantee continuous improvement and adherence to agreed-upon UIP practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-domain and enterprise teams to establish standardized JIRA workflows for all cross-domain teams involved in Frontier. Identify and overcome organizational obstacles that impair team performance. Partner with leadership to eliminate roadblocks and promote an environment dedicated to ongoing enhancement.
  • Guide cross-domain teams to maintain alignment, effective planning, and timely delivery of high-quality products. Balance execution against organizational goals, steering teams to fulfill business objectives. Work with other tech enablement teams to ensure compliance with HPE standards and consistency in development metrics across all teams engaged in Frontier/UIP.
  • Promote robust communication and collaboration among teams to align program objectives, deliver final products, and ensure leadership is transparent about impediments and progress. Elevate the maturity of the agile mindset through insightful questions focused on scaled program planning, scrum-of-scrums, identification of cross-program dependencies, scaled release planning, empirical decision-making data, and ultimate work effort delivery.
  • Hold teams accountable while offering support for successful delivery, and facilitate decentralized decision-making aligned with business goals. Coordinate with QA and DevOps teams to integrate and enhance testing, deployment, and automation processes, ensuring high standards throughout the development lifecycle and enable teams to achieve High Performing Engineering in delivering incremental business value.
  • Coaches and mentors other SMs, managers, and POs to improve both their own and other`s knowledge and skills; Shares best practices across the organization. Assesses and progresses Agile maturity at the team of teams level. Acts as an advisor in growing others` Lean-Agile teaching skills. Develops & delivers training on a variety of Lean-Agile frameworks/scaling methods. Pinpoints opportunities when engineering practices can benefit a program`s ability to deliver high quality value.
  • Facilitates difficult conversations with groups/teams. Acts as a go-to person for groups outside of their team to facilitate events. Surfaces & works with key stakeholders to address anti-patterns that impede organizational agility. Drive program level data-driven continuous improvement through focused qualitative and quantitative retrospection.
  • Creates & contributes to Agile communities (cohorts, circles, etc.) to support continuous learning & foster a Lean-Agile mindset at Liberty Mutual. Ensures proper transparency and visibility into dependencies and risks. Guides and drives the implementation of a scaling framework for team of teams to optimize value delivery in a single program or value stream.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor`s degree in a relevant field (business, computer science, humanities, etc.
  • Minimum 6+ years of IT and Program Management experience working in an Agile team, including coaching on Lean-Agile approaches.
  • Minimum of 8 years in a leadership position, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Knowledge/training equivalent to at least one advanced certification from a reputable Lean/agile organization preferred.(SPS, SAFe SPC, SAFe SM, ICAgile Professional Agile Team Facilitation (ICP-ATF), ICAgile Professional Agile Coaching (ICP-ACC)).
  • Requires excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and team building skills, and business judgement.
  • In-depth knowledge of business functions and extensive understanding of business operations, strategies and objectives.
  • Ability to effectively apply scaling frameworks and methodologies.
