Ideal Candidate Should Have:

Job Overview:

Thinking Minds' client is looking for a Forensic Electrical Engineer to join their specialized team in fire investigation and forensic engineering. In this role, you will analyze the causes of electrical failures and fires, providing expert opinions grounded in scientific methods. You will work on investigations involving electrical appliances, commercial power systems, battery energy storage systems, and more, ensuring detailed, defensible reports for clients in the insurance and legal sectors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Investigate fire causes and electrical failures using scientific principles and methodologies outlined in NFPA 921
  • Conduct forensic examinations in both lab and field settings, working alongside multi-disciplinary teams
  • Analyze residential and commercial electrical systems, including utility and battery storage systems
  • Prepare and deliver comprehensive reports based on evidence and analysis
  • Provide expert testimony in legal proceedings
  • Lead investigations and mentor junior engineers, fostering a collaborative environment
  • Maintain thorough records of all work, ensuring accuracy and traceability


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • California PE License (additional state licenses or NCEES certification a plus)
  • Experience with fault and failure analysis of electrical systems and appliances
  • Knowledge of commercial power systems and battery storage systems
  • Ability to apply the scientific method and evaluate evidence for defensible conclusions
  • Excellent communication skills for client interactions and court testimony


Preferred Skills:
  • Certification as a Fire Investigator (IAAI, CCAI, or NAFI)
  • Expert witness experience
  • Experience with hazardous materials
