Department Summary

The primary mission of the Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) organization is to make fundamental scientific discoveries and to develop these discoveries into first and best in class therapeutics that provide unique benefit to patients. The gRED Business Operations team is the central business support team for gRED and is responsible for oversight and improvement of key business processes and technological solutions to advance the gRED's mission. We partner with colleagues across gRED functions, Genentech, and Roche to develop solutions and processes that enable our scientists to achieve gRED's mission.

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic recent graduate to join our team as an intern. This role will support corporate-wide initiatives focused on system changes and sustainability, with support and guidance from senior members within Business Operations. This internship position is located on-site at our campus in South San Francisco, California.

The Opportunity
  • Partner with manager to provide support to the functional area in short- and long-term business planning, functional goals, operational capabilities
  • Develop an understanding of general project / systems / business operations management practices, business process improvements and/or transferable project management like experiences
  • Provide recommendations for process improvements, support the implementation of value-added business process design and improvement solutions and assess their effectiveness.
  • Create and distribute initiative communications.
  • Manage and track project timelines, logistics, and resources; prepare meeting agendas, team minutes, and follow up on action items; provide regular project communications and status reports.


Program Highlights
  • Intensive 6 month, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
  • Program start dates are in January (Spring)
  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are (Required)

The ideal candidate will have a passion for health or environmental sciences, some laboratory experience, and some exposure to project management and process improvement practices.

Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:

- Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program)

Required majors: Bachelor's degree in science or engineering, environmental science, health Science, biology, engineering or equivalent curriculum in a related field.

Required skills:
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and develop strong partnerships with key customers and stakeholders.
  • Able to multitask and manage competing priorities with direction and work effectively with peers and leaders.
  • Exposure to project management practices.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to perform business process analysis and provide recommendations for improvements.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications and Google Suite.


Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • A background or strong interest in health or environmental sciences, with some laboratory experience preferred
  • Ideally, some experience in project management or process improvement initiatives.


The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, California is $20 - $55 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
