The Assistant Manager of Community Engagement plays a vital role within the Department of Public Safety at Columbia University, reporting directly to the Assistant Director. This position is instrumental in planning, developing, and presenting comprehensive crime prevention programs for the entire university community. As a key member of our team, the Assistant Manager will help foster a culture of safety and awareness among students, faculty, and staff in promoting a safer Columbia community.

Responsibilities

  • In this multifaceted role, the Assistant Manager will facilitate engaging orientation lectures and presentations for incoming students, student organizations, and all university employees in the absence of the Assistant Director.
  • Develop and facilitate specialized training sessions for Public Safety personnel, focusing on crime prevention strategies and techniques.
  • Organize and lead self-defense classes and crime prevention seminars, ensuring that the Columbia community has access to essential safety resources and knowledge.
  • Contribute to the quarterly Crime Prevention Bulletins, providing timely information and updates that enhance awareness of safety issues.
  • Under the guidance of the Assistant Director, this position will be involved in crime prevention initiatives that include the purchase and sale of crime prevention equipment to Columbia affiliates, ensuring adherence to best practices in purchasing and managing university assets and funds.
  • Recruit and inspect stores participating in the Safe Haven program across Columbia’s three campuses, ensuring alignment with safety standards.
  • Oversee the department’s inventory, including uniforms and equipment used by Public Safety staff.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director to plan and execute Community Engagement programs and events, which may require working evenings and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience required, and 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong communication skills are essential.
  • Must be capable of strenuous physical activity, including walking, climbing stairs, and carrying equipment or packages weighing over 25 pounds, as well as standing or sitting for extended periods.
  • Must be willing to work in various weather conditions.
  • The Department of Public Safety operates 24/7, so the Assistant Manager must be available to work weekends, late evenings, and early mornings as needed.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with crime prevention programs in an academic environment is preferred.
