The salary indicated is the full time annual salary amount and includes the base, professional development and enrichment. Actual salary is pro-rated based on duration of the leave replacement contract.

The School Counselor provides proactive leadership that engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help students achieve success in school. Their guidance aligns and works with the district’s mission to support the academic achievement of all students. The counselor is responsible for academic and career counseling, student planning and course selection, evaluation of student transcripts, and ensuring that students have fulfilled the necessary requirements for graduation in accordance with Mercer Island School District.

Essential Functions

  • Assist students with class selection.
  • Evaluate student transcripts ensuring that the number of hours required for a subject has been filled and any pre-requisites have been satisfied.
  • Guide students and parents in the use of test results for educational and career planning.
  • Assist in the evaluation of test results and student grades to determine if the educational goals have been achieved.
  • Provide information on college and career testing to facilitate registration.
  • Counsel group or individual students through the development of educational and/or career planning services as needed.
  • Counsel small groups and work with individual students with problems and/or refer to appropriate community resources.
  • Assist with coordinating college fairs, mentoring programs, community service hours and programs related to career opportunities expressed by the students.
  • Work cooperatively with parents and students’ teachers to resolve any concerns relative to their student.
  • Communicate district student service programs to parent groups.
  • Ensure that class schedules are complete in Skyward
  • Monitor class credits and grades for all students to ensure they stay on track for graduation
  • Ensure timely communication of credit status with parents and students.
  • Ensure accurate credit information is maintained in Skyward.
  • Ensure all students have a high school, and beyond, plan of educational development.
  • Respond to crisis situations when appropriate.

Other Functions

  • Serves on staff committees as required.
  • Performs related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Required to deal with a wide range of student achievement and behavior; required to remain flexible to meet students immediate needs; required to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize; may experience frequent interruptions; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; in some positions the necessary and appropriate instructional methods may require specific positions and movements, and sufficient stamina and exertions, to demonstrate techniques properly for student safety, or to conduct or direct students; in some positions precautions may need to be taken to prevent or lessen exposure of self and/or students to various materials, fumes, equipment, cutting edges or hot surfaces; may utilize a computer for many hours during the day.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Integrity and professionalism
  • Ability to operate within a wide range of student personalities and backgrounds
  • Education in various models of teaching, best counseling practices and regulations
  • Excellent communication skills and high emotional intelligence abilities
  • Proficiency with computers
  • Experience with secondary level education related counseling
  • MA degree in social work, school counseling or equivalent;
  • Washington State ESA endorsement
