Introduction to the job

ASML US, including its affiliates and subsidiaries, bring together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop lithography machines that are key to producing faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient microchips. We design, develop, integrate, market and service these advanced machines, which enable our customers - the world's leading chipmakers - to reduce the size and increase the functionality of their microchips, which in turn leads to smaller, more powerful consumer electronics. Our headquarters are in Veldhoven, Netherlands, and we have 18 office locations around the United States including main offices in Chandler, Arizona, San Jose and San Diego, California, Wilton, Connecticut, and Hillsboro, Oregon.

The Advanced Development Center at ASML in Wilton, Connecticut is seeking an Intern to work in the EUV Products team with expertise in nanostructured functional ceramics or polymers.

The Advanced Development Center (ADC) is an multi-disciplinary group of engineers and scientists focused on developing learning loop solutions, proto-typing of next generation wafer \u0026amp; reticle clamping systems and industrialization of proto-types that meet the system performance requirements.

Role and responsibilities

The main job function is to investigate material performance and structural properties that lead to enhanced tribology, protective, or cleaning function.

Specifically, the Intern will:
  • Understand wear mechanisms and sources of particle and molecular contaminants that impact current product performance
  • Develop methods to quantify the wear-resistant, protective, or cleaning efficacy
  • Perform necessary sample cleaning and preparation for measurement
  • Perform tests to quantify material performance matching the intended application
  • Characterize the material byproducts, contaminants, and their transport generated during the intended application
  • Investigate material nanostructure and root-cause failure mechanisms using analytical tools (SEM, AFM, WLI, TOF-SIMS) on proto-types \u0026amp; components.
  • Collect, organize and document data as part of a team dedicated to solving challenging engineering problems with nanometer scale precision.
  • Clearly communicate progress and status of technical activity to management
  • Support preparation of design reviews for the development team
  • Submit invention disclosures for novel processes and concepts developed
  • Follow all environment, health, and safety (EHS) policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment.

  • Master\u0026#39;s degree or PhD preferred
  • Experience with MATLAB or Python
  • Prior experience with analytical tools (SEM, AFM, WLI,TOF-SIMS) or nanostructuring methods (directed self assembly, lithography and etch, imprinting, FIB) will be beneficial.

Skills

  • Strong background of course work and experimental research background in materials science or chemistry
  • Advanced knowledge of the material, mechanical, and chemical properties of thin-film coatings and ceramic structure
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of friction and wear processes in metallic, ceramic, and polymeric materials
  • Excellent experimental, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Good understanding and experience in material analysis tools analytical tools (SEM, AFM, WLI,TOF-SIMS)
  • Good understand and experience with nanostructuring methods (directed self assembly, lithography and etch, imprinting, FIB)
  • Proficient in MATLAB or Python for data analysis
  • Able to work in the clean room environment using knowledge in material and material interaction (especially glass, ceramics, thin film materials, gases, etc).
