Liliʻuokalani Center (LC) Summary

Informed by a deep understanding of the adolescent experience and grounded in Hawaiian culture, the new LC will provide Hawaiian youth with opportunities to connect to peers and mentors, receive supportive services, and discover pathways to passion, purpose, and prosperity. LC will be Liliʻuokalani Trust’s signature youth development hub for culture, creativity, technology, and play, and will serve as a resource center where youth can connect to vital support and a vibrant community. LC will be a safe space located in urban Honolulu where youth are inspired to pursue their dreams, including exploring pathways in the arts, sports, technology, and entrepreneurship while receiving wraparound support to help them reach their goals and become thriving adults.A primary function of LC wi ll be to provide a space for young people to play, to learn, to find connection and inspiration, and to experience joy. Currently under construction, LC is set to open in Summer of 2025 .

Job Purpose

The Learning Design Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, leading, and evaluating innovative, culturally responsive, and engaging learning and educational programming at Liliʻuokalani Center (LC). This key position is responsible for ensuring that all educational programming aligns with LC's mission, vision, and values, is culturally aligned, and reflects best practices in education and youth development. The Learning Design Manager will work closely with the Community Engagement, Wellness, ʻŌlino Pathways Arts and Culture, Life Readiness, and Culinary teams to create and deliver integrated, holistic, high-quality, impactful programs that meet the needs and interests of Native Hawaiian youth.

Key elements of this role are developing partnerships with relevant organizations locally and nationally and organizing ongoing learning sessions at LC. The Learning Design Manager will serve as an internal resource for educational design and training, collaborating closely with the Director, Life Readiness and other teammates to develop models for certification and diploma programs that are innovative and future-facing. This role requires a strong background in curriculum design, instructional strategies, assessment, and evaluation, as well as a creative, collaboration approach and the ability to lead a team in producing learner-centered, outcomes-driven, and culturally relevant learning experiences.

All programming will integrate into the LC’s holistic wraparound support services and engaging arts, sports, entrepreneurship, technology, and culinary programming. Working collaboratively with other leaders, the Manager will maintain a state-wide view and awareness of youth interests and needs, and will collaboratively lead efforts to develop responsive, accessible, and engaging programming.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Design and manage educational programming at LC that is aligned to LT strategic initiatives
  • Ensure deep integration of educational programming across program strands, including with the arts, culture, wellness, and community engagement teams
  • Work collaboratively with LC and LT leadership to increase program integration, focusing on ensuring that wraparound supports are built into all programming in a meaningful way
  • Develop, in collaboration with other leaders, a range of engagement opportunities, with both drop-in offerings and ongoing skill-building pipelines, ensuring an appropriate balance of drop-in and closed programming, including opportunities for special events and workshops
  • Through intentional programmatic development, design, and implementation, cultivate a sense of community and social/emotional support for participants
  • Work collaboratively and innovatively with all programs teams to identify opportunities to integrate educational credits into programs
  • Lead and co-lead workshops and educational programs as appropriate and necessary
  • Hire, train, and manage new and existing teammates, as appropriate
  • Serve as the lead for the development, implementation, and evolution of LCʻs GED/HSE programs and collaboratively develop and maintain a strong relationship with the DOE
  • Work collaboratively with the Research & Evaluation team to design, oversee, and manage data collection processes that provide regular, actionable feedback from participants to inform program design and ensure high impact programming.
  • Engage with stakeholders across the educational ecosystem both locally and nationally to ensure that program offerings meet the requirements for credits, credit recovery, on time graduation, and are aligned with recognized best practices in the field
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with local organizations, educational institutions, and community networks to ensure a continuum of care for LC participants
  • Identify, cultivate, and develop strong programmatic partnerships with local and national service providers, including potential colocation at LC as appropriate
  • Guide and support peer mentors, youth leads, and tutors involved in programming at the Learning Lab and other LC venues for educational support
  • Develop curricula for courses and workshops aligned with industry and educational standards
  • Stay up to date regarding current research and innovations in education, integrating this learning into program design and sharing knowledge with LT teammates as appropriate and helpful
  • Lead teammates by modeling design thinking and creative problem-solving methodologies
  • Speak publicly about LC programming and, as appropriate, assist with outreach and enrollment efforts
  • Establish strong ties to LT’s Youth Advisory Committee, increasing opportunities for youth voice and youth leadership throughout LC
  • Ensure that programming emphasizes global citizenship balanced with deep understanding of Native Hawaiian culture, highlighting opportunities for learning and advancement for participants while also strengthening ties to local communities
  • Work collaboratively with program leadership to ensure appropriate staffing and supervision of all program spaces
  • Provide program coverage as necessary
  • Participate in program planning and budget development, revision, and evaluation

Other Duties

  • Contribute to the Trustʻs success by accepting new assignments, helping team members, learning new skills, and collaborating as we strive to attain the Trust’s strategic goals
  • Provide transportation for organization related business, such as driving staff, beneficiaries and/or families to assigned destinations
  • Participate in continuing education and training opportunities for professional development
  • Evening and weekend hours required as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Graduate degree preferred) in a field related to education OR a degree applicable to educational programming for youth (sociology, neuroscience/psychology, etc.)
  • Deep understanding of Native Hawaiian culture, values, and history, with the ability to integrate these into programming, fostering connection, learning, and holistic development
  • Minimum of two years of teaching experience in public, charter or independent schools
  • Public service experience preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with HIDOE system or school district organization
  • Competency with learning management systems and education technology
  • Experience with innovative or alternative models for secondary education
  • Deep knowledge of youth development, curriculum design, and pedagogy

Travel Requirements

In alignment with our organizational competencies of Alu Like I ka Hana (Teamwork) and Ho`omau i ka `imi Na`auao (Continuous Learning and Improvement), this position will require occasional travel across the island, inter-island, and out-of-state depending on the needs of the team and the organization. While travel may not always be a need, the ability to travel when required remains a crucial aspect of this position.
