Job Summary

The CNC Mill Operator will operate and maintain CNC milling machines to perform various milling operations. This includes reading blueprints and ensuring products meet specified tolerances. The role also involves conducting regular maintenance and ensuring a safe, clean working environment.

Duties/Responsibilities

Machine Operation:

  • Set up and operate CNC milling machines to produce parts according to specifications.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, machine speeds, and feeds for each job.
  • Monitor machine performance and make necessary adjustments to maintain accuracy and quality.

Blueprint Reading

  • Interpret engineering blueprints, sketches, and CAD models to determine product dimensions and machine setup requirements.
  • Input or adjust CNC programs as required to meet job specifications.

Quality Control

  • Measure and inspect finished products using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools.
  • Ensure parts meet tight tolerances and maintain quality throughout production runs.
  • Perform first-piece and in-process inspections to identify defects and make necessary adjustments.

Machine Maintenance

  • Perform routine maintenance, such as cleaning machines, changing tools, and lubricating parts.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve minor mechanical or programming issues as they arise.
  • Report major machine issues to maintenance or supervisors.

Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records of machine operation, part counts, and inspection data.
  • Complete work orders, log run times, and record materials used in production.

Safety And Compliance

  • Follow all safety protocols, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and regulations, particularly in regard to workplace safety and environmental standards.

Required Skills/Abilities

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in operating CNC milling machines and related tools.
  • Strong understanding of machining processes, including milling, drilling, and tapping.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics.
  • Experience with CNC programming (G-code) and machine setup is a plus.

Attention To Detail

  • Ability to work with precision and accuracy, maintaining tight tolerances.
  • Skilled in using precision measurement instruments (micrometers, calipers, etc.).

Problem-Solving Skills

  • Ability to troubleshoot minor machine malfunctions or quality issues.

Communication And Teamwork

  • Able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills to collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and fellow operators.

Education And Experience

  • High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate)
  • Post-Secondary Certificate - awarded for training completed after high school (for example, in Personnel Services, Engineering-related Technologies, NIMS, CNC Trades, Mechanics and Repairers, Precision Production Trades)
  • 2-3 years of CNC Operation

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, feel/reach with hands/arms, and talk to hear.

The employee frequently is required to sit and walk. The employee is occasionally required to bend and stop, push and pull, reach above shoulder level, kneel, squat, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job to include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
