Bill Hodges Gallery, located in West Chelsea, is seeking an exceptional individual to join as a Gallery Assistant. The gallery primarily owns and exhibits museum caliber art created by artists of the African Diaspora, such as Norman Lewis, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Richard Hunt, Edmonia Lewis, Elizabeth Catlett, and countless others. This is a full-time, permanent position with hours from Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm (occasionally Saturdays).Please carefully review our requirements prior to applying.

Who Will Work Well with Us:

• The ideal candidate is passionate about the arts and eager to continuously learn more about art and the world around them.

Must Be:

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
  • Have a foundational (or higher) knowledge of major African American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries (not just contemporary artists)
  • A strong writer with experience in writing art criticism
  • Driven, curious, and able to pivot between tasks
  • Experienced with a background in the commercial art world

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Writing academic level copy for exhibition texts and press releases
  • Contributing to weekly e-blasts (art sales and informational)
  • Researching and building contact lists for business development and outreach
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of the works in the current exhibition and within the collection

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop
  • Familiarity with an art inventory management system (FileMaker Pro, ArtLogic)
