As a Math Coach, you will deliver as-needed academic support and mentorship to students in our programs. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who want to work with motivated young students and contribute to the AoPS community. In this role, you will be part of a humble, hungry, and hard-working team expanding the pipeline of future STEM talent.

NOTE: This is a PART-TIME VIRTUAL Position. Students schedule appointments based on need and your availability.

The Math Coach

  • Meets with elementary, middle, and high school students for 1-1 math coaching sessions, providing homework support, engaging in discussions about math topics, and encouraging critical thinking and problem solving.
  • After each coaching session, provides updates to the outreach team and the student’s parent(s) about their progress and summarizes learnings from the session as well as recommendations for follow up.
  • Keeps availability up-to-date in the booking system so that families can schedule appointments.
  • Attends and participates in professional development and coaching sessions.
  • Completes other tasks and responsibilities, as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Must be 18 years old or older
  • Has strong math content knowledge, ideally through the advanced high school level
  • Has exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Is detail-oriented and organized
  • Has experience teaching or tutoring students at the K-12 level is strongly preferred, ideally with experience fostering a learning environment that is student-led and encourages critical thinking and problem solving
  • Has an engaging and enthusiastic demeanor when working with students
  • Has a strong interest in working with high-achieving K-12 students from diverse backgrounds
  • Has familiarity with the AoPS curriculum is a plus
  • And experience with math contests is a plus

For Each Individual Session You Will

  • Support enthusiastic elementary, middle, and high school students taking AoPS classes with their homework and have math conversations about their topics of interest.
  • Provide updates to the outreach team and students parent(s) about their progress and summarizing learnings from the session as well as recommendations for follow up.

Schedule

This is a part-time position, with an anticipated commitment between 5-15 hours per week, depending on availability.

Because sessions are scheduled as-needed by students and families, exact schedule and total hours may vary week to week. A small number of students schedule recurring weekly sessions.

The most requested session times are weekdays between 1pm-5pm PT , and weekends between 9am-3pm PT. Currently our days with the most need for coverage are Fridays and Saturdays. An ideal candidate will be regularly available for at least 8 hours per week within these high-demand time windows. Apart from that, you will be able to set and update your availability for sessions at your discretion. Please note that the work often slows down during the summer.
