The Johnson Space Center JSC) Human Health & Performance Contract (HHPC) has an opportunity for a recent STEM graduate to provide System Safety Engineering support to NASA by applying engineering skills and knowledge within the field of Human Spaceflight. The Safety Engineer will use qualitative methods to conduct Hazard Analyses on Flight hardware in accordance with Programmatic requirements in order to ensure that all hazards are identified and controlled. The selected candidate will work with the other members of the Flight Project team to design out or mitigate any hazards and establish robust verification methods (evidence) for hazard controls and will document the results of the Hazard Analysis in Hazard Report format and present the results to NASA Safety Review Panels. In addition, the Safety Engineer will represent the company and / or customer in outside discussions and technical forums while under the supervision of more seasoned engineer(s). Work is performed under general administrative and technical supervision and may entail other duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan, develop, and execute Safety-related project tasks throughout the project lifecycle.
Perform Hazard Analyses on multiple systems of moderate complexity.
Construct a defensible position to justify why the system is adequately safe to use in manned spaceflight applications.
Generate Hazard Reports and supporting documentation.
Communicate risks and recommend solutions to improve product safety to Project Management.
Work with design and test engineers to implement hazard controls and collect evidence of successful implementation.
Conduct Safety Reviews with NASA Safety Panels.
Participate in hardware design reviews.
Collaborate with other Safety Engineers to share knowledge and improve corporate expertise.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Required
Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics field plus 0-2 years' experience in related field

Desired
0-2 years previous experience within NASA JSC community
0-2 years previous experience in engineering projects for space or aerospace related systems

SKILLS / TRAINING
Required
Strong written and oral presentation skills
PC Skills in Microsoft SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

Desired
Hardware / software design life cycle
Failure prediction, estimation, and control methodology
Fundamentals of System Safety
Fundamentals of Systems Engineering
Human Factors in system design
Ability to develop logical arguments for engineering design concepts
Ability to understand complex designs and communicate concepts with other disciplines
