JOB SUMMARY

UTSW is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to join our dynamic IT team. This key role will be responsible for the design, implementation, and management of our network infrastructure in a complex academic medical environment. As the Senior Network Engineer, you will be instrumental in maintaining critical networking services that support our clinical, research, and educational missions, ensuring that our systems operate efficiently, securely, and reliably. The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience in Cisco networking, Palo Alto firewalls, Aruba wireless infrastructure, network automation, and optical networking. However, hands on Cisco networking experience is required for this role. You will work closely with the Network Manager and other IT staff to design and manage a secure, high-performing network that meets the unique needs of clinicians, researchers, educators, and administrative staff. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule with on call rotations.

  • Experience
    8 years Of experience in an enterprise support role and relevant experience with software or appliances used in network systems and relevant experience with software or appliances used in network systems.

Primary Job Duties
  • Configure and maintain Palo Alto Strata firewalls to secure clinical and research data, ensuring compliance with industry standards such as HIPAA.
  • Oversee the configuration of GlobalProtect VPN for secure remote access, supporting the needs of clinicians, researchers, and staff working remotely or in the field.
  • Ensure seamless wireless performance for various user groups, including students, researchers, and healthcare professionals.
  • Implement network automation tools and techniques to streamline network configurations, monitoring, and operations, enhancing the efficiency and consistency of network management. Utilize tools like Ansible, Python, or Cisco DNA Center to automate processes, reducing manual interventions and improving uptime.
  • Monitor network performance using advanced tools and proactively address issues to ensure 24/7 operational support.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues to maintain high levels of performance and security, particularly for mission-critical applications in clinical and research settings.
  • Collaborate with clinical, research, and administrative departments to meet their specific networking needs.
  • Provide technical expertise to ensure that network configurations support their applications, devices, and workflows.
  • Act as a technical liaison, communicating effectively with non-technical stakeholders to address networking concerns and provide solutions.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of network configurations, topologies, and changes, ensuring that all modifications follow best practices and are easily accessible for audit and review.
  • Lead and manage network infrastructure projects, such as upgrades, expansions, and migrations.
  • Ensure that these projects are completed on time, within budget, and with minimal impact on daily operations.
  • Support cloud integration initiatives, ensuring compatibility and secure connectivity between on-premises networks and cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure).

Additional Job Duties
  • Manages the network security posture as it relates to numerous network projects.
  • Performs evaluations, recommends, and implements solutions from a network security-wired and wireless perspective.
  • Provides security technical expertise and assistance for design integration support applications, networks, communications, and operational systems with members from other divisions within Information Resources.
  • Plans, documents, and implements network communications systems.
  • Provides specifications and detailed schematics for network architecture including MOPs and project plans.
  • Provides specific, detailed information for hardware and software selection, implementation techniques, and tools for the most efficient solution to meet business needs, including present and future capacity planning.
  • Coordinates testing of network design for redundancy, resiliency, and capacity.
  • Performs firewall implementation and administration as needed based on requests and required maintenance.
  • Maintains technical expertise in all areas of network and computer hardware, software interconnection, and interfaces such as routers, firewalls, switches, gateways, and related functions.
  • Maintains and plans WAN connected clinics and sites.
  • Evaluates and reports on new communication technologies to enhance the capabilities of the network.
  • Mentors and supports the work activities of lower-level Network Engineers.
  • Remains knowledgeable of changes in technology, industry practices, and state and federal regulatory requirements by attendance at training seminars, trade shows and related venues.
  • Participates in on-call rotation and scheduled change windows whose duties include nights and weekends
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
