What does a Civil Engineering Intern do for us?

Operating under supervision and with significant oversight, an Engineering Intern works within an assigned group to assist engineering staff while gaining valuable skills and experience. They may interface with internal departments and external organizations, receiving regular guidance from leaders and other engineers.

High Voltage Transmission – New Line Route Design

The Engineering intern will work within an assigned group to assist engineering staff while gaining valuable skills and experience. Any engineering degree is eligible to be considered for the positions listed below, regardless of listed discipline. The assignments are as follows:

The Transmission Engineering team designs and supports Idaho Power’s high voltage electrical power lines - the backbone of the electrical grid. The intern has a unique opportunity to utilize and put into practice the Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical skills they have learned in school to design a future transmission line project. They will be tasked with engineering the most efficient, economical, and environmentally responsible design for a new high voltage transmission power line, including the foundations, poles, insulation equipment, and wires. This position also offers the opportunity to learn and utilize design and analysis software tools, including PLS CADD and LPile. The intern will also have the opportunity to develop professional relationships and real-world skills by interacting with other engineers, project managers, construction crews, supply chain team members and others at Idaho Power. Along the way, the intern will identify and perform improvements to the existing design process and standards, including line tensions, load cases, structure families, and assemblies. The transmission system is critical to meeting Idaho Power’s 100% clean energy by 2045 goals and this position offers the opportunity to design real electrical infrastructure seen across our community.

Substation Structural Design

Idaho Power’s substation engineering team improves the company’s core business by developing design and material packages for infrastructure upgrades and new substations. Idaho Power’s substation engineering and design teams are experiencing a large influx in projects associated with load growth, renewable generation interconnection, and ongoing system maintenance, reliability, & compliance. Substation structural engineering at Idaho Power is a unique and specialized field requiring a multi-disciplined engineer with knowledge of Civil, Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering concepts. The primary focus of the Stations Structural Engineering Intern will be scoping, engineering, and design support for a large-load customer transformer upgrade project. The intern will be exposed to substation structural design elements such as site grading, foundations, steel structures, bus ampacity and conductor selection, physical layout, electrical clearances, and grounding. The Stations Design group serves as a liaison for integration of substations into the overall power delivery system, and the intern will be exposed to several other departments such as Planning, Apparatus, System Protection, Communications, Controls, Transmission & Distribution, Construction, and Project Management. The intern will have the opportunity to visit existing substation sites and active construction sites, as well as other Idaho Power facilities such as stores warehouse, skills training center, and generation facilities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Currently enrolled in an ABET accredited program majoring in engineering at a junior, non-graduating senior status, or in an advanced engineering degree program

Physical Requirements

This position is a sedentary job requiring working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. Ergonomic accommodations including sit to stand desks are available and installed as needed. Additional Information

Occasional overnight travel may be required. Some roles require field visits and outdoor work. Candidates for these roles must be able to hike and walk over uneven terrain possibly in inclement weather.
