The Research & Development team explores the new opportunities that emerging technologies may provide media organizations over the next 12-18 months.
The New York Times is seeking two creative and motivated interns to join R&D this summer. In these roles, interns will be embedded on a team of engineers, designers, journalists and creative technologists and contribute to the work of one of our research areas.
About Our Summer Internships
The hourly rate of base pay for this role is:
$40 — $40 USD

About Our Summer Internships
- The duration is 10 weeks long, starting on June 2, 2025.
- The rate of pay for this role is $40.00 per hour.
- Interns work 35 hours per week.
- This is a hybrid role based in New York.
- Focus on a journalistic need (like tools for journalists or new reader experiences) and prototype solutions within R&D research areas. Recent R&D intern projects have included adding location data to travel content using NLP, building augmented reality story formats, designing the interface for an AI-assisted newsroom tool, and using computer vision to more accurately search The Times’ archives
- Work with autonomy in an interdisciplinary team of engineers, designers, journalists and creative technologists
- Be matched with a teammate to guide you throughout summer on R&D and participate in The Times’ full summer internship program across engineering, research, and design
- You have a portfolio of school and personal projects in topics related to the R&D team’s research areas
- You have hands-on experience with at least one specialized technology relevant to R&D research areas such as: WebGL, game engines (Unity, Unreal), machine learning frameworks (pytorch/Tensorflow/Caffe) or mobile app development
- You have a solid grasp of basic web development, and know how to deploy apps to the cloud
- You enjoy finding creative solutions to technical challenges
- You have an interest in journalism and a desire to build amazing, innovative experiences for our readers
- You have an enthusiasm for The New York Times and its products/experiences
