The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is currently hiring an Intern for our related organization, the Anesthesia Quality Institute (AQI), located in our corporate headquarters in Schaumburg, IL. This part-time, seasonal position will offer challenging work/project(s) within an exciting industry. The Intern will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced Association professionals in a flexible, innovative, mission-driven, and member-centric environment.

Internship Responsibilities:

This position will be responsible for the following:

Research:

  • Investigate external datasets (e.g. CMS, AHRQ, NIS, AHA, NSQIP, etc.) including data elements available for analytic comparison or supplemented data capture with AQI registries data.
  • Conduct literature review of anesthesia outcomes research to identify highly referenced and relevant studies to guide future research efforts (Including research from NACOR, MPOG, ASA practice guidelines, and other related organizations).

Analytics:

  • Produce and organize descriptive data results to evaluate completeness of target data elements within AQI registry data (examples below):
    • Generating tables/figures of rates of valid/invalid data for core data elements or producing rates of useable data for key patient safety outcomes.
    • Develop focused datasets from larger AQI registry data for efficient and accessible data dashboards or research analyses
  • Conduct hypothesis-driven analyses to be used in publications, reports, and/or marketing initiatives. Analytics include statistical modeling (e.g. multivariate regression) to investigate patient safety outcome associations to anesthesia patient and case characteristics.
  • Evaluate data submission trends and lessons to be learned via basic data queries from high-quality NACOR participants.

Internship Details:

  • Unpaid/academic internship.
  • 6-12-month commitment (semester or full school year).
  • Interns will work approximately 25 hours per week.
  • Interns will be expected to work onsite in our Schaumburg, IL office a minimum of 1-2 days per week.
  • Interns will be closely managed/mentored by their hiring manager.
  • Interns will receive feedback regarding their work and performance.

Internship Eligibility:

  • Students must be enrolled in a college/university. Students pursuing a degree related to science (biostats, data informatics, epidemiology, etc.) required. Graduate student preferred.
  • Experience with statistical programming language required. SQL or R programming preferred. SAS or STATA experience also helpful.
  • Familiarity with clinical vocabulary and/or healthcare-related work experience is preferred.
  • Preference will be given to students receiving college credit for the internship.
  • Students must interview with Human Resources and the Manager/Director who will be responsible for overseeing the work.
  • Students must intern in an area which is related to their academic major and degree.
