Most of the programming at Ampact is focused on education - specifically through the Reading Corps, Math Corps and Early Learning Corps programs. These programs have a 20-year track record in providing high-dosage tutoring to over 50,000 students annually and have been tested rigorously through independent evaluations. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Data Engineer to own Ampact's data and architecture. This individual will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and maintaining robust data management processes and procedures. Leveraging your expertise in data architecture, integration, and governance, you will collaborate cross-functionally to ensure the quality, integrity, accessibility, efficiency, and security of our organization's data assets. In addition, you will play a crucial role in designing and maintaining data structures that enable efficient storage, retrieval, and analysis of information across our organization.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions
  • Implement and execute performance tuning strategies to optimize system efficiency, including analyzing bottlenecks, fine-tuning configurations, and optimizing queries for improved response times and resource utilization.
  • Develop and implement robust data models to support business requirements using relational and dimensional modeling techniques, data normalization, and schema design to ensure scalability, performance, and data integrity within the organization's databases and systems.
  • Develop comprehensive data roadmaps outlining the strategic direction for data management, integration, and utilization, including identifying key milestones, technologies, and processes to ensure alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Reverse engineer data systems and vendor applications to understand data structures, relationships, and integration points, enabling effective data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes for data migration, integration, and analysis purposes.
  • Investigate data sources, understand data repositories, and create documentation for future optimization.
  • Provide actionable recommendations to key stakeholders and business teams for improving data quality, reliability, and efficiency based on the analysis of integrity issues and process inefficiencies.
  • Collaborate in the development of data roadmaps outlining strategic initiatives to address identified gaps and drive continuous improvement.
  • Establish and maintain data lineage documentation, mapping the flow of data from its origin through various transformations and systems, ensuring transparency and traceability for compliance, auditing, and troubleshooting purposes.
  • Provides thought leadership to develop new or improved processes, methodologies, systems, tools and/or services to enhance operating environment based on practical experience, optimal outcomes, and best practices.

Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

Minimum Experience
  • 5+ years' experience in data modeling, database design, and data architecture roles.
  • 3+ years' experience in data management, data governance, or related roles.
  • Strong understanding of data management concepts, including data modeling, data quality, metadata management, and data security.
  • Experience with data management tools and platforms, such as data cataloging tools, metadata management tools, and data governance frameworks.
  • Proficiency in data modeling tools such as ERwin, ER/Studio, PowerDesigner, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of relational database concepts and SQL, with experience in designing and optimizing database schemas, indexes, and queries.
  • Familiarity with dimensional modeling techniques and data warehousing concepts is desirable.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, Cassandra, or Elasticsearch is a plus.
  • Familiarity with database management systems (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL) and data integration technologies (e.g., ETL, ELT).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certification in data management or related areas (e.g., CDMP, DAMA) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements, such as GDPR, HIPAA, SOX, etc., is desirable.
