ACS Publications is a Division of the ACS and has all the characteristics of a medium-large scientific and technical publishing organization. It is one of two Divisions charged with serving the dual function of generating a reliable annual surplus to support the Society's programmatic activities, while also fulfilling a core goal of the Society in advancing knowledge in the field of chemistry and the chemical enterprise. The Division publishes 80+ high-quality peer-reviewed journals covering the breadth of chemistry and allied fields, as well as numerous other high-quality products and services of benefit to the global community.

The Publishing Operations & Business Systems Platform Engineering team provides technology services and solutions for the Publication Division's operations related to content publication.

The successful candidate will lead a technology team to achieve the following outcomes:
  • Successful service management of mission-critical publishing technologies, with special focus on content publication systems including journal and book production systems, content management, workflow orchestration, and content transformations editing.
  • Deliver solutions-focused responsiveness to time-sensitive production problems.
  • Drive new product development and delivery efforts outside of the existing Publications product portfolio inventory.
  • Provide expansion capability for existing services, including but not limited to domestic and offshore vendor workflows and deliveries.
  • Responsible for developing, delivering and running highly stable and fault tolerant system operations through collaboration with technical services teams.
  • Provide highly effective solutions and technology services while constraining costs.
  • Highly contribute to the development and execution of the strategic direction of the Publications Division.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the design, development, testing, and deployment of software solutions, ensuring they meet business requirements and quality standards
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, QA, and operations, to define project scope, priorities, and timelines
  • Drive the adoption of best practices in software development, including code reviews, testing, and documentation
  • Provide technical guidance and support to team members, helping them to solve complex technical challenges
  • Monitor and manage team performance, conduct regular performance reviews, and provide feedback
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and publishing industry trends and incorporate this knowledge into the team's development practices
  • Contribute to the development of the overall technology strategy and roadmap, aligning it with business objectives
  • Assist with managing resource allocation, project budgets, and timelines to ensure successful project delivery
  • Manage domestic and offshore technology vendors, including managed services.
  • Uphold and reinforce the SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) principles and methodology through an Agile sprint framework
  • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment, promoting diversity and collaboration within the team

Software Engineering Team
  • Develop and maintain high-quality software solutions
  • Test and deploy scalable and reliable software applications
  • Translate requirements into technical specifications
  • Debug and resolve software defects, performance issues and other technical challenges
  • Participate in code reviews and ensure code quality
  • Collaborate with the onshore enterprise architecture and software engineering teams to align on technical requirements, architecture, and project timelines
  • Implement industry standard DevOps practices

Service Delivery
  • Manage business expectations and review workload with stakeholders for prioritization
  • Act as the primary point of content for all stakeholders regarding offshore service delivery issues and escalations
  • Manage and communicate service delivery metrics to critical business partners.
  • Manage the daily operations of the offshore service delivery team to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
  • Manage recurring governance, ensure adherence of service level agreements (SLAs), and resolve escalations both with business customers and with Delivery team.
  • Develop and utilize internal reporting to manage performance and ensure internal / external SLAs are being met
  • Identify potential risks to service delivery and develop mitigation strategies
  • Regularly monitor and report on service performance, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement across all delivery teams

People Leadership
  • Build a high performing technology team that takes pride in work they deliver
  • Lead, develop and mentor members of the technology team, fostering a positive and productive work environment
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication
  • Identify, manage, and resolve conflict
  • Define, establish, and implement appropriate performance measures for staff

OH-based: This role is based in our Columbus, OH office. A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is between $142,000 & $193,000 per year.
